Toys and Games Reviews of Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader? DVD GameCustomer Review: Just like the game; good family fun Summary: 4 Stars
For those familiar with the fun TV quiz show, this game is very similar. The DVD can be played on your TV or computer. Adults can play with kids (not necessarily 5th graders), kids can play with kids, and even adults can play with other adults, to see who is "smarter." The questions in math, science, English, social studies, etc., are taken directly from the 5th grade through 1st grade curriculums, some of them more challenging than you might expect. Of course, the reason that adults sometimes fare so poorly against ten-year-olds is because much of what kids are learning in school is never used and therefore forgotten.
I have a couple of small complaints. First, there are only 20 complete games, and each game takes about 15 minutes to play, which means that total play time is only about 5 hours. Perhaps I am spoiled by video games which can take hundreds of hours to complete! On the other hand, 20 games for $20 works out to a reasonable one dollar per game. Second, there are only 10 questions per player per game. The total number of questions, including the million dollar bonus questions, is 420. This time I am spoiled by other knowledge-based games with more than a thousand total questions, usually with the option to purchase more. Third, the questions for each game always repeat in the same order, so if a player gets halfway through and then drops out, he must answer the same questions again before getting the chance to answer the remainder of the questions for that game. I suppose this is not necessarily a fault, because it reinforces knowledge retention, but it can get a bit boring for players who drop out multiple times.
All in all it's a good, fun, educational game. I just wish there was more of it!
Customer Review: I am not smarter than a 5th grader Summary: 3 Stars
The DVD game of the popular game show called "Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader" starring Jeff Foxworthy isn't NEARLY as good as the Deal or no Deal DVD game I got for Christmas yesterday. Even though everything is very close to how it is on the TV game show, the fact you are only given 20 games is a major disappointment. This means it's the same questions every time you start up a game. Once you blow through all 20 games, all the questions will repeat again. Sure, some of Foxworthy's lines are pretty nice, but that's about the only thing making it above normal. Just like in real life, Jeff likes to trick you into thinking you're wrong, only to smile and yell "That's RIGHT!"
The Head to Head option is disappointing as well, because all they do is just take the same questions from one player mode and throw them in the two player game. It's really not that great of a game. It's surprising to me that the kids in the game aren't the same as the ones from the TV show (not that I'm really complaining about that- I love kids after all).
It's understandable that some of the questions would be tricky, especially some of the 1st grade questions. Sorry, but these aren't really 1st grade questions. I know I'm not exactly the smartest guy in the world, but I'm pretty sure, unless you were put in the super intelligent class, we weren't really concerned with geography and music back then, other than pointing out the cool-looking countries on the map and singing along to the Beatles "Yellow Submarine". Maybe my school was different from most, I don't know.
Worth renting, not buying.
Customer Review: Game is MUCH too slow to be fun Summary: 1 Stars
I played this game with my family during a recent get together. While the appeal of this game is pretty great, the execution is TERRIBLE. It runs VERY slowly on the DVD player, and that would be merely annoying were it not for Foxworthy's constant "funny" comments about your question choice, your answer, etc. The video snippets preface and follow each question, as well as every stage of the game.
Imagine listening to Foxworthy ask you if you're smarter than a fifth grader. Then waiting for the DVD to load a question. Then answering the question. Then, watching Foxworthy give you the same "clever" trick answer to each of your questions. Next Foxworthy will tell you how far along the million dollar prize you are, and then the whole thing REPEATS for the person you're playing against. Finally, imagine shooting yourself (because you'll want to after one round).
If they wanted to make this game good, they would have eliminated or greatly restricted the number of times Foxworthy makes an appearance. Of course, that wouldn't make it worth the $49.99 Amazon is currently asking.
Don't buy it.
Customer Review: I totally am Summary: 5 Stars
I have some fifth graders that live in my cove and they think they are all smart. They ride their bikes through my yards and broke my window with a baseball last summer. I'll yell things at them all of the time when I come outside in my hip waders and fur coat. They think I'm dumb. Well, I taught them a lesson you won't forget. I went and bought this game. When they threw poop at my house, instead of yelling at them, I told them I've got a little game hosted by my good friend Jorff Foxwrothy that I'd like to challenge them to. They came over to my driveway and we played this game. I destroyed them like Chaka Khan owned Mongolian. I knew the answers to at least 23% of the questions. They didn't know anything. Each time they missed one I yelled at them for being stupid and told them they should be in school They said it's Saturday and I did the moonwalk. We played for an hour and I won every game. They still throw poop and food at my house, but at the end of the day we all know who is smarter. Thank you Jorff Foxwortohy!!
Customer Review: Challenging game, not that easy Summary: 4 Stars
I got this game about a year-and-a-half ago. Some questions are not all that easy and make you think. Ironically, when I brought it to a friend's house, my friend ended up winning a million bucks and I bombed out somewhere in the middle of the game. You can play alone or with one other person. More than two people requires you to pair up as teams. Jeff makes his smart aleck remarks and the kids can help you out. It's a little slow paced, but other than that it's a faithful replica of the TV show.
I have yet to win the million bucks in this particular version of the game, though I won the million in the PS 2 and PC versions. It comes with only 20 games, so I'm guessing the questions repeat after you go through them all. One other thing, for fun, I indicated that I did not admit to not being smarter than a fifth grader. Jeff Foxworthy told me "You forfeit the game." A humorous way to humble you and your ego when you don't do well.
