Toys and Games Reviews of Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader? GameCustomer Review: Are you kidding me? Summary: 3 Stars
My kids (8 and 15) and I don't know the show. So I judge purely from my first time experience. We played the game with both children. I was excited in the beginning as my little one showed the interest in learning. But then the old one got bored and the little one was confused and frustrated. As much as I like the idea of educational game I was disappointed in a quality of this product. I completely agree with other reviewers that the rules made unnecessary complicated. We had to change them almost from the start. But the worst part is that many questions DO NOT belong to the grades groups they are in and there are even mistakes in answers.
Here are few examples from 1st grade group:
Q.: "True or False? An acute triangle has 3 angles that add up to less then 90 degrees."
A.: "True"
What? Are you kidding me? What kind of math is it? I thought it is always 180. And where did you see the geometry in the 1st grade?
Q.: True or False. President Abraham Lincoln made the Louisiana Purchase.
A.: False. It was Thomas Jefferson.
Excuse me? Is this 1st grade or 5th grade question?
Q.: If a DVD cost 12 dollars and 99 cents including tax, how much money you will get back if you pay for it with 15 dollars?
From what I know in average school in US they learn that kind of problem only in 2nd grade and dealing only with whole dollars or coins.
There are number of geography questions for all grades. The funny part is that there is no subject "Geography" in American school.
It's OK that they are trying to challenge young kids. But come on... Be realistic. They become frustrated and loose the interest very quickly.
Customer Review: Meritless Garbage Summary: 1 Stars
I bought this for my sister and brother-in-law; it was a terrible gift. It was hardly like the show. It wasn't fun. The instructions were convoluted and unclear. The rules were stupid. The questions were often poorly worded or too open-ended for a single answer. SOME OF THE QUESTIONS WERE IN THE WRONG CATEGORIES. There weren't very many questions. There was no way to walk away early and keep say 500,000 dollars, and if you lost you didn't get 25,000 as long as you'd made it that far, like in the show. This combined with the fact that one person goes at a time makes it barely a competition at all.
There is no reason why this game should cost more than 5 dollars. Hasbro can't have put much thought or effort into making it. They are simply selling a piece of junk to suckers like me by using the name of a popular game show.
Customer Review: Not Much to It.... Summary: 3 Stars
I like the show very much, but the game had complicated directions for something so simple...it was made "cheap" and only one deck of cards so you go through the cards pretty fast...it is not very exciting to play. To play you place cardbboard pieces on other cardboard places that are marked how much money you are up to when you get a answer...whoopee :( No board involved...speaking "bored" that is how we were, so we just pulled from the deck asked each other questions.. That was fun and educational to a level. Too easy for most educated people. Too pricey for what you get, needs more cards and something else, Jeff maybe?! I will watch the show...
I would not purchase this product for the money.
Customer Review: Fun, but with Errors Summary: 4 Stars
My family and I have had lots of fun with this game, however we decided to play the game with slightly different rules as the procedure and setup seemed rather complicated for the younger kids. I have discovered a few errors with the answers (e.g. density is NOT mass/weight, but rather density is mass/volume). There are a few others like this, but it doesn't really take much away from the educational value of the game so long as someone realizes that the alleged answer is incorrect. We have fun looking up the topic and finding the correct answer (usually in support of the person who actually gave the correct answer). If there weren't errors, I would give this five stars all the way!
Customer Review: Great....if you only want one person to have a turn! Summary: 2 Stars
The rules for this game are ridiculous. As mentioned in another review, you really need to make up your own rules in order to make this a game for everyone to enjoy. We bought this as a family game, but the questions are just too simple for adults. We have played twice by the traditional rules; both times it was easy to reach the million dollar question without the other parent/sibling team getting a chance to go. Very disappointing for kids! I gave this a two-star rating because there is a lot of new trivia that the kids can learn from the question cards. I wouldn't recommend this toy unless it's offered at a significant discount off the retail price.
