Toys and Games Reviews of SorryCustomer Review: Fun means never having to say you're "Sorry!" Summary: 4 Stars
At around age 6 or 7 (circa 1979 or so) I had officially graduated from Candyland and was ready to move on to something a little more challenging. So my Mom introduced me to Sorry!, and after countless hours of playing it in my youth I must admit I've got a big ol' soft spot for it to this day. The game has a relatively short play time and is very easy to pick up and learn, making it ideal for introducing youngsters to boardgames at an early age.
Sorry! is a variation on a much older game called Parcheesi, the only major differences being that in Sorry! cards are used in lieu of dice and there are a number of spots on the board called "slides" which one player may use to send an opponent home. The game is made for 2-4 players and includes 16 player pieces (4 in each color; red, blue, green, and yellow), and a deck of Sorry! cards. The gameboard is square with an outer "track" with spaces for player's pawns. On this player path are a number of what's called "slides". There are four separate "Start" areas where players place their Pawns at the beginning of the game and four "Home" spaces, where all players will want to get their Pawns to in order to win the game.
The deck consists of cards with numeric values (1 through 12) and a smattering of Sorry! cards. Each card allows a player to move that specific number of spaces forward, although certain cards in the deck will allow the player to do other things. The Seven card, for instance, allows you to either move a single Pawn forward 7 spaces or to "split" the total into separate moves for two different Pawns (one Pawn can move forward 3 spaces, another 4, etc.), while the Eleven card will allow one player to switch their Pawn with another player's, if it's advantageous to them. The titular Sorry! card allows a player to take one of the Pawns from their Start area and switch it with an opponents, whose Pawn is summarily sent back to its Start position.
If players land a Pawn on the start of a Slide of a different color than their own piece (there are two on each side of the board) then the player may "slide" a few extra spaces down the board. Any unlucky opponent within this area that's hit by the sliding piece gets sent back to it's Start spot. In addition if one lands a Pawn on a space already occupied by an opponent's Pawn that player gets their piece sent back to Start. The game is absolutely rife with opportunities for creating havoc with your opponents and is very cut-throat in nature. Attached to the Home position is a track that breaks off from the main board and moves toward the center of the gameboard and attaches to the Home position. This inner track, which consists of about 7 or 8 spaces, is intended as a safe spot, and is marked as such. If a player wants to engage in some shenanigans with an opponent's Pawns, and said target Pawns are in the safe area, they are untouchable, and the player must find some other player's Pawns to pull their hijinks on.
The game ends when one player is able to get all four of their Pawns into the Home position. Given the dynamic of the game, that being to essentially upset the apple cart for one's opponents, this turns out to be quite a bit tricker than you'd expect. Expect games to go anywhere between 20 - 40 minutes, depending on how many people are playing. This is an absolutely ideal game to play if your family has a "Game Night" system in place and will likely be a big hit. It has good replayability and has never ceased being fun to me, despite its lack of depth. Axis & Allies it's not, but it is great fun nonetheless!
Description of SorrySince 1934, players of all ages have been chasing one another around the classic game board, trying to get their own four pawns from Start to Home. But it's not that easy, because you never know what the next card will hold: Will you move forwards or backwards' Will you hit a slide and shoot ahead, or will an opponent bump you back to start' For 2 to 4 players. Contents include: Sorry! game board, deck of cards, and 16 pawns. This classic game of luck, strategy, and determination is easy to grasp for children as young as 6 years old, yet it's fun for adults and older siblings too. By drawing cards, players move their game pieces around the board, hoping to eventually accumulate all their pieces at the final destination--home sweet home. Sorry is known as the game of "sweet revenge," since players can send each other's pawns back to the starting line, thus forcing one another to lose ground and begin all over again. This kind of frustration may be hard for children under age 8 to handle. In fact, young ones typically crumble into tears of outrage when their pawns are cavalierly sent back. The only recourse is to teach children how to plot their own revenge, which makes them feel as powerful as superheroes.
