Toys and Games Reviews of Scrabble Diamond Anniversary EditionCustomer Review: A couple of oversights Summary: 4 Stars
I bought this to replace an aging old-fashioned flat Scrabble board, so I was thrilled about the raised grid and the rotating aspect.
But there are a few negative things I reluctantly must mention.
As mentioned in some of the other reviews, the tiny instruction book could have been designed to fit into the drawer and lay flat.
But my real gripe is the OFFICIAL Scrabble dictionary does not fit into the drawer. The book was commissioned and licensed by Hasbro, so they might have insisted it fit into the drawer, which it does not. For travel purposes, it would be FAR more convenient if it did.
The little spikes of color on the bonus spaces are mostly printed with a curve, as if the unit went through the printer in a big hurry. This, more than anything else, makes it look cheap.
Customer Review: Good value, shame about the colors Summary: 4 Stars
Compared with all the myriad editions of Scrabble which vary between stunningly overpriced or alarmingly cheap, this is a good value. It has proper wooden tiles (silver letters on black wood). The well-built rotating board doubles as the box, and it has the obligatory ridges to keep the letters in place. Plus it all folds up into a fairly compact package. On the downside, they changed the color of the bonus squares, which, well...what were they thinking, honestly? Especially in an "anniversary edition", it's a real head-scratcher, and at least at first seems like a real distraction. The whole thing also just has a cheap, plasticky look about it, even if it seems fairly sturdy. If you can get past appearances, though, this is probably the best Scrabble edition out there right now unless you want to spend a lot more money.
Customer Review: Rugged, portable, self-contained word-fun Summary: 5 Stars
This is a great edition of the classic Scrabble game. I really liked the design of the molded plastic case which opened up to reveal a raised-grid to keep your tiles in place. The unit is rugged and sturdy and would travel quite well thanks to the built-in handle and all-in-one construction. The bottom of the case has wheels to allow for easy pivoting from player-to-player and has two slide-out drawers that hold all of the game pieces. Speaking of game pieces, this inludes snazzy black wooden tiles with silver lettering, a soft velvety bag to hold them in and futuristic rounded tile-stands in clear red plastic (as opposed to the wooden ones of days of yore). The design of the actual playfield is less striking than previous versions as this one seems "candy-coated", but is still nice enough.
Customer Review: LOVE IT!!! Summary: 4 Stars
I remember spending hours with my grandmother playing Scrabble when I was growing up. This is a nice travel version. I have the folio travel Scrabble, but the board is small and hard for older people to see. I will use this when my family travels and at home because my kids love the board. I did make sure to save the box it came in as I think one hard shake or bump could make it come open while traveling. I LOVE the wheels on the bottom of the board. They make it really easy to turn. I do agree that the plastic used for the drawers that hold the letters and the racks for holding the letters could have been a little sturdier. Overall I would say get this if you are a true Scrabble junkie. I have the onyx version of Scrabble and that is hard to top, but then again it is bulky and harder to travel with.
Customer Review: Fun and Educational - a perfect match! Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased this game for my almost-26-year-old son as a gift. It's one of his favorite games, which says a lot for a guy with former spelling "issues". I can honestly say that this game, combined with prefix/suffix information, improved his spelling and reading (and then comprehension!) significantly as a junior high student, and now as an adult, too! Thanks to the ability to read and understand, he became an avid reader, a better student, and even graduated from high school early! I know it sounds funny to attribute his success to a game, and I'm not saying that this game was the "it" that did it, but Scrabble sure did help! This particular version is more mobile for him whether he goes to game night at a friend's house, or stays home. It's easier to store than the old box version, too.
