Toys and Games Reviews of Scrabble Diamond Anniversary Edition

Customer Review: Great Scrabble Set!
Summary: 5 Stars

I read the majority of the reviews for this scrabble set and based on them I thought I would write my own.

This board is really nice, with raised squares so that the tiles don't slide all over like in the basic version of scrabble. I believe one of the reviews claimed that the letter tiles were plastic - this is not the case, they are wooden tiles painted black with silver writing and ours all look perfect (no scratches and you can see what all of the letters are just fine). My favourite thing about this board is that everything fits inside the little storage slots on the bottom of the board, and then the board folds up to get put away. Also, the board rotates around in a circle which is handy, and although it isn't whisper quiet (as another review complained about) - who cares!

I guess the one thing about this board that could be better are the racks that hold your letter tiles. They are cheaper than I expected, even though I knew they were going to be plastic. I know some people also complained that the colors on the board were changed but unless you're a scrabble champion this probably won't make any difference to your gameplay.

All in all, if you want a great scrabble board that is a bit fancier than the basic version for a reasonable price, this is a great option. If you want high quality wooden parts a super high quality board, then you should probably look to dish out the $150 for the nice wooden version.

Customer Review: Scrabble, Diamond Anniversary Edition
Summary: 4 Stars

Scrabble Diamond Anniversary Edition

This is one of the niftiest Scrabble boards we've ever seen, and we have the mondo $100+ Deluxe Premier Wood Edition to compare it to!
What we like most is how it folds into a platter sized suitcase, and although our wood edition is great, I confess to an affinity for rugged ABS plastic, which this one is made of. It has two big drawers that snap flush with a satisfying snap and an excellent raised board grid that securely hold the tiles (deeper, by comparison, than the Deluxe version).

The tiles in this anniversary set are black with silver inking, not our favorite, but might be yours. In any event, Hasbro has superb customer support and you can get any of the different tile types (or parts for that matter) from Hasbro for little dinero. Additional features are a rotating board on rubber wheels and it has a built in carry handle. Although we prefer the pivoting of our Premier version, the ability to spin the board around to your partner is key and the wheel technique is not half bad. Finally, the game comes with curved tile trays that better shield your letters from prying eyes. Speaking of eyes, the color scheme for the multiple letter/word slots is changed and, frankly, a bit wonky on the eyes . . . lime green and popsicle orange . . . what were they thinking?

All in all an excellent choice for a family or travel board.

Customer Review: Worth the Money for People Who Play Frequently
Summary: 4 Stars

Like many of the other reviewers, I like a lot of the changes they have made. It is nice to be able to turn the board so easily (though you need to be careful your tile rack is out of the line of fire), the raised gridlines make tile placement easier and minimize movement if the board or table is bumped, and the fact that it is self-contained makes storage and portability a breeze!

The changes I do not like are the tile racks, which I think are cheap-looking and more difficult to put your tiles on, and the changes to the colors of the bones point blocks on the board. After decades and decades of playing with pink and red, and pale and darker blue, it just seems odd and pointless, and makes it seem too modern. I tossed the red racks and just use the wooden ones from my older game, and they fit fine in the side drawers (which are brilliant!).

I am sure that in time I will adjust to the new colors on the board and if I had tried, I probably could have learned to tolerate the tile racks, but there are too many other things in life that require my energy. This game is worth purchasing if you frequently play Scrabble, for the raised grids, wheels, side drawers, and the shell it is encased in. If you only pull out the game once a year, I'd stick with the original and use a lazy susan.

Customer Review: Scrabble on wheels...wheee!
Summary: 5 Stars

I have every edition of Scrabble from the 1950s through the present, so I'm kind of a die-hard. That being said, this Diamond Edition is a newly revamped Scrabble game...what could better raise the heartrate of a word nerd?
The new set is very cheerful looking and the board finally moves so all can push it around and really see what's what. The curved racks are great. Just a few down sides. One is, they use the same color in this edition for the double letter score that they used for the triple letter score in the original, and the color that was the triple word score in the original is now the color for the double word score! I love that this set looks more like eye candy, but couldn't they have thought up a few slightly different hues for those spots, instead of changing what we're all used to? I'm not a reactionary - I love change, but this just seems sort of unnecessary. It is annoying for quite a while, but one can adapt. The other minor thing is that there's no score pad. That is greatly outweighed, however, by the fact that this great set can be easily toted around because it folds up into a neat little lunch-boxy thing. You can leave your Onyx edition with the box the size of New Jersey at home.

Thanks, Scrabble. We'll see you at the Platinum Edition??

Customer Review: worst design
Summary: 1 Stars

My mistake was to assume this game is great for travel - not so - it's heavy and twice the size of the old version.
It does look beautiful, but that's not the purpose of the game. As a daily player used to the old version, I wish I had not bought it. We are still trying to get used to it, including the new color scheme - there's no reason for changing that.
The positive thing about this game is that the tiles don't slide off the board when accidentally bumping it.
The swivel wheels are a nice feature, but we read sideways and don't need to turn the board. I do like the curved tile holders.
The negatives are that the tiles are difficult to get off the board to slide back into the nice little sack. A new design is not always an improvement and this Diamond version proves the point. If the recesses for the tiles had one tapered side it might work.
There's no space to store the book. We are back to the old box held together with packing tape.
The game might work for newbies, who have nothing to compare it to.
Sorry, I would have liked to write a better review, but it does not warrant it.
