Toys and Games Reviews of Monopoly

Customer Review: Where's the banker's tray???
Summary: 5 Stars

I think Monopoly is well understood to be a fantastic, awesome, wonderful game. It is a careful balance of business savy and sheer luck. It is a delightful way for a family to have a wonderful afternoon trying to run one another into financial ruin. :)

However, after a lifetime of Monopoly with my parents' Monopoly set, I struck out on my own and bought my very own monopoly set. When I opened the box, I was amazed to find that the old banker's tray that used to be a vacuum-formed thin piece of plastic with slots that held each denomination like a cash register till has been replaced with a half-tray. The new design is made as a thin piece of vacuum-formed plastic like my parents' set was. The new design is apparently supposed to hold the bank money sort of upright, however it is open along one edge. As a result, keeping the bank money from falling out of the tray is an ongoing part of the game with my set. And the bills tend to get a bit more abused and end up tattered trying to keep them upright and situated in this thing.

So again, it's a wonderful, fantastic game. But i sure wish the basic edition included a tray to better hold the bills.

Customer Review: Out of the Depression came something great...
Summary: 5 Stars

Ah, Monopoly! You remember back to your childhood days, when the entire family would gather around for a very special Monopoly evening. We kids would stare engrossed at the board as it gradually changes from a barren board, to a rumbling metropolis. Delight in seeing your oldeer brother get bankrupted on a Boardwalk with a hotel, or your mom hitting the cells. What seem like minutes suddenly become hours and hours, with thr game pieces wearing depressions on the game board itself. Pass Go, collect 200 dollars, you owe me 1000, go directly to Jail, all are common utterings. Even more than 50 years later, this classic board game still delights young and old alike, the young, the new generation of Monopoly players; and the old, the die hard gang. Monopoly, the game that rose from the mind of a young unemployed businessman, is still a cult phenomenon today, in which you have Star Wars, Nascar, football, electronic and computer versions of the original game, sure to please somebody. Monopoly, the game that was called a failure by "Parker Brothers" with 52 fundamental errors, is only a failure in not selling well.

Customer Review: Classic American Game
Summary: 5 Stars

Monopoly may well be "the" game of the 20th century. Players work their way around the board acquiring properties, utilities, railroads and wealth. The goal is to accumulate wealth faster than your opponent with the goal of eventually bankrupting them.

The game can be played until only one player is left, or following a time limit. Why a time limit? A game of Monopoly can literally turn into an "all-nighter". I have been involved in 3 player battles of Monopoly that have lasted well over 6 hours. Granted, most Monopoly games do not take this long, but on the other hand very few finish in under 2 hours.

Monopoly is a rarity in our modern busy culture; a game that is time intensive. Most modern quality games (like Lost Cities or Ingenious), even though they are a blast to play, games are designed to be played in 30 minutes or less. For this reason, Monopoly might not have the appeal it once had.

I for one still find it a joy to play, and with the hundreds of versions and styles available, you can play Monopoly in any genre you like. My favorites are Star Wars Monopoly and Wisconopoly.

Customer Review: Who gets the top hat?
Summary: 5 Stars

This game is the standard by which all other board games are measured. Yet it can be surpassingly simple or complex as the sophistication level of the players change. I played this as a child with my siblings. We would once in a while adjust the rules such as no houses until a certain time. Sometime this would create a shortage of money in the bank. So we would make our own $5,000.00 notes. As we mature, the strategy is to seek patterns of behavior in the other players and the built-in probabilities of the game. It is a good idea to read the rules once in a while to remember the more obscure options.

The name of the game is Monopoly. So you can guess that that is also the objective of the game. Nobody said you couldn't have fun on the way. It can be educational in not only learning the rules of the game, but also in how these rules parallel real life. We have some chance with dice and the luck of the draw from two different card stacks. The skill comes in what to buy, build, or trade. As far as durability, you will lose the parts before they ware out.

Customer Review: When will we wake up
Summary: 1 Stars

It's about time people admitted that this is the worst board game ever invented.

Totally devoid of anything needed to win other than luck of the die this game is about roll and move... roll and move... repeat.

Eventually people will begin to trade, if you do not the game will never end. Someone will trade something they shouldn't have, and the dice will then (eventually) cause that person to lane on something they can not pay for. Where is the skill, where is the fun?

Let's add to this that the great time of a game can take 4 to 5 hrs to finish. Features player elimination so that a few of the people will have to sit around and watch the game grind to an end or maybe find something else to do for a few hours.

Why do people keep buying this? There are better games. Much better games exist out there. These games involve thinking, and can be finished in less than 2 hours. You can find them by going to Google and searching on "board game".

Think about it before you buy this stinker.
