Toys and Games Reviews of Game of LifeCustomer Review: My kids have inherited a love of Life Summary: 5 Stars
This was one of the games I never got tired of when I was a kid. Even a really frustrating round just made me more anxious to play again, to see if I could get a better job or a nicer house in the next game. Now I watch my own kids -- 9, 14, and 17 years old -- play together. There aren't many games that appeal to that wide an age range. And they have their own, idiosyncratic traditions -- the first set of twins must be named Bobo and Bubba, and solicitous questions about their well-being arise throughout the game. The sheer number of cards and small pieces make the game a bit of a trial to set up, and decisions are just a little more random than I'd like, but those are small quibbles against an otherwise delightful game. Don't leave the game out if you have animals or toddlers, though -- the "children" are the size of sawed-off toothpicks, and a little one could easily swallow Bobo, not to mention Bubba.
Customer Review: New Version of The Game of Life Summary: 2 Stars
We looked forward to the day when our two daughters were old enough to play the game of life with us--a game we so much enjoyed as kids. We bought them a current version in 2001 and have been very disappointed. We had no idea that a game that had been great just the way it was had been changed. It is more difficult to play and geared more toward older kids--probably teens. There are now life tiles which add nothing to the game at all. The players can decide to buy stocks, insurance policies, take out bank loans. Players pick their own careers as well as their salaries and even which home they will buy. Requires strategic financial planning. Also, the money amts. involved get very high making counting work, not fun. In addition, our board folds up and is already falling apart on the folds and we take very good care of our games! We miss the old Life!! This new version is too complicated for younger kids.
Customer Review: Going through LIFE Summary: 5 Stars
The Game of LIFE is a very fun game, though it takes quite a while to set up the board. At the beginning, you get to choose whether to start in college or jump right into a career. If you get the police career card, you get $5,000 from anyone who speeds (spins ten). As you go through the gameboard, you get married, buy a house, have babies, and (ready for the most exciting part?) earn salaries! You also earn LIFE cards, which earn you big bucks, but you cannot look at them until the end of the game. You can even buy stocks and insurance! If you choose to jump right into your career, you choose a salary card which can range from $20,000 to $100,000. You also chose a career, anything from artist to computer consultant. The bad thing about this game is that the "people pegs" you get when you are married or have babies, always fall out of their cars. I would recommend this game for ages 6 and up.
Customer Review: New Game of Life - HORRIBLE Summary: 1 Stars
We recently purchased this game for our daughter because it was one of my favorite games when I was a child. Unfortunately I wasn't aware that it had been "improved." I can't even express how disappointed I was when I realized how much they had changed this game. It has gone from being a simple pleasure to play to a complicated mess! Not to mention the board that has to be put together each time and the people that won't stay in the cars... I plan to log onto the Milton Bradly site and let them also know my opinion, maybe the will remarket the older, better version. I suppose it might be ok to anyone who has never experienced the 70's version - but if you are expecting the good old Game of Life - Buyer Beware! I advise all of those out there who are as disappointed as I am to also write to Milton Bradley, maybe they will listen if enough people complain and bring back the one we all remember!
Customer Review: BEWARE! This is not the game you remember! Summary: 1 Stars
Do NOT confuse this new version of LIFE with the old version!!! The old version is a classic--this new version is a big disappointment. In the new LIFE you don't get to choose your career or anything. Instead of monetary bonuses throughout the game (e.g. spinning for gifts when you have a child) you get these silly "Life" cards that you can't look at until the end. At the end you get huge amounts of money with each "Life" card and it's possible to win even if you don't have very much cash in front of you because of those cards. It's disappointing to play the whole game and then lose because of those cards, which are totally random. It's like you play the whole game and then spin to see who is the winner. We became very bored with this game very quickly because it's almost nothing like the old Life game. The old Life game was more true to life. The new game isn't.
