Toys and Games Reviews of Game of Life

Customer Review: Not the same LIFE as when I was a kid
Summary: 3 Stars

Growing up, my family always loved playing games, so now that I am starting a family of my own, I've been collecting old favorites for my own "game library." The Game of Life was one of the first games I purchased, but I could not have been more disappointed in the quality of the "new and improved" game.

The game I grew up with had the buildings, bridges, houses, etc. permanently embedded into the game board. With the new game, these 3D decorations come off and and have to be placed on the board each time you play. This is my main complaint with the new game. Every time you accidently knock the board or brush one of the buildings with your sleeve, they fall off. Add to this the age-old problems of people not staying in the cars and the spinner not working properly (it's worse in the new game, by the way) and The Game of Life becomes a game of frustration.

After one game with the new game board, our family decided we would not play the game again. I am now looking on auction sites trying to find one of the "old fashioned" game boards. They really took a step backwards with this one.

Customer Review: Read the Reviews Before You Buy!
Summary: 2 Stars

I wish that I had read some of the reviews before I purchased this one. We had this game when I was a kid and it was one of my favorites. However, I didn't realize that they had revised the game.

I find the new format frustrating and empty. There isn't as much interaction between players in this one (others don't have to give you money when you get married, have children, etc.), except for the career spots and those detract from the game - they're pretty pointless and not true to the real world as we know it.

I have to agree with the previous reviewer who found the LIFE cards very annoying. There doesn't seem to be any hope for the underdog in this version; if you don't happen to pick a good salary, you won't win, no matter how many LIFE cards you pick up along the way.

I really wish that they had left the game the way it was! I think we'll go dig up the old one that my husband's parents have somewhere. That will be more fun!

Bottom Line: After wanting to own this game for a while, I wish I hadn't wasted my money. I'll just find an older used one. One word - disappointing.

Customer Review: Wow, so many flaws
Summary: 3 Stars

First of all I would like to ask those people that complains how this game doesn't give interaction between player when you get marry or children. What are you talking about? May be if you read the rule you would see that if you spin the wheel when you get marry u would get money depends on the number u get, secondly if u get a kid people pay you 5k. Sure its not like the old one, and of course there is so many flaws that comes with the rule. They don't have an explaination for everything, or at least what you suppose to do with the investment when to do it or when to use the spin to win. This can be very confusing for new players, but once you get it going you kinda get what you are doing. As for the wheel it still have that wheel of fortune like design, may be you just didn't press the plastic piece in there far enough. Though overall its an ok game with all the flaw, but the incompetent of the maker who can't even line up the right color for the right number is just plain stupidity, they reversed the side the color suppose to be which makes it totally different, and confusing for new players.

Customer Review: The Facts of Life
Summary: 2 Stars

My daughter received Life as a birthday present and I was very excited to play, thinking it would bring back great memories! Unfortunally they tried to "improve" on a classic and totally ruined it. The spinner derails on every spin and my daughter can barely get it to go around once. You have to assemble the board everytime and pray you get the houses in the right spots, instead of it being fixed and ready to play like the GOOD version. The people fall out of the cars and are so microscopic, I'm sure the vacuum cleaner will find them before I do. There are these strange "Life" cards that make no sense whatsoever, debunking the whole purpose of earning any real money. There are no gifts from the other players when you get married or have kids. In fact, there's no reason now to even have kids! That was the whole fun of the game, piling in as many as possible into the car! I will gladly pay more for the "real" version. I guess it's time to go find one at a yard sale or Ebay.....

Customer Review: Life makes you think about what COULD happen in yours.
Summary: 5 Stars

When my daughter received a LIFE game for her birthday, we weren't sure if it would be a game the family would play more than once. After one session with the board, getting married having kids, paying bills, taking out loans and suffering major and minor setbacks in our "play lives," we decided it was a must play game for our family. My daughter kept having twins, paying taxes, and having auto accidents (which convinced her of the need for insurance when she starts to drive). She chose not to go to college, but to take a shortcut to the winner's circle, and found out that just as in real life, the uneducated receive a much smaller payday. Every other player beat her when it came to their financial situation at the end of the game. The next time we played, she selected college as the route to go. We recommend this game to every family out there who wants a game for everyone to enjoy. There are laughs galore, and a hilarious race to retirement. Pick one up and see what you're missing!
