Toys and Games Reviews of Candy Land Castle GameCustomer Review: Cute, but keeps jamming. And iffy storage. Summary: 4 Stars
My 2.5 yo son got this from his grandparents for Christmas. It's very cute, and great for the young preschool set. My son thinks the little castle and candy cane handle are great! And I personally vastly prefer it to the marathon of classic Candy Land :) Maybe we got a lemon, but the pieces seem to get jammed in the chimney pretty often. It's easily fixed but annoying. And storing the pieces and cards isn't perfect. I have the cards in a gallon zipper bag and the pieces in a quart zipper bag inside that, next to the castle on the shelf. It works so far, so I wouldn't let that stop me from buying it. Because as others have mentioned, there aren't that many games for this age group, and this is an appealing one. I do think it's overpriced here for twenty-five dollars, and if I'd been buying it myself I would have looked around for a better deal.
Customer Review: Pieces lost in five minutes, limited game play Summary: 3 Stars
I am so thankful that I managed to get this game for under $10 because it's already pretty much ruined. There is no place to keep the pieces, unless you can successfully jam them all into the top of the castle and manage to keep them from spilling out. We've also lost two of the game cards already. It would be a lot better if they had provided a real box to keep the pieces together in, instead of a cut-out box that is useless except for in-store display use.
The game itself did not hold my son's attention for more than five minutes. He liked shooting the pieces out, but other than that, he was bored. I think it would be a great first game for an older two-year old to very young three-year old, but there is a very small age range that would find this game interesting. It's just a little too easy for most children over 3.5.
Customer Review: Cute Game Summary: 5 Stars
This is a really cute game for kids approx. toddler through age 6. At first I thought it was going to be electronic, and I was glad to find out that it doesn't make noise and doesn't use batteries. Whoopee! Kids of all different ages like to play this game, including my 2 year old nephew and 5 year old niece. I even let the one year old play with the pieces, sorting them, putting them in the castle, and shooting the pieces out. It is a great game for learning shapes, colors, and cause and effect for younger kids. The only thing I worry about is that it might be priming them for an addiction to slot machines! haha. You'd know what I mean if you heard the sound it makes and saw them pull the lever. :) I would recommend this game.
Customer Review: Great Beginner Game Summary: 5 Stars
Our daughter received this game on her first birthday. It is recommended for ages three and up, but her grandmother had heard it was almost too little by then. However, one was too little to start playing - the pieces are much too small for a child that age. But, we pulled the game out at about 17 months, and have played with it ever since. My daughter loves to get it out, and begin matching the pieces. It has been great for working on her shapes and colors. She truly has learned her colors from this game. It is also a great way to practice taking turns. My daughter loves to have people play this with her, but she's also content to play it on her own, and match up every last shape and color. It has been a great game!
Customer Review: Way to simple for most children above 2 yrs. old! Summary: 1 Stars
I thought this would have been a bit more involved, considering its for 3+ kids. NOT! It is the most simple of board games, just matching the 4 shapes and/or colors of the 4 playing pieces on each board game. It looks cute, but has no educational value for any child who has practice in basic colors and shapes. I'm a pre-school teacher, 3-5 yr. olds, so I have a pretty good idea of what children this age are capable of and this games offers them no challenge whatsoever! I think the age suggestion is due the slight possibility of a younger child swallowing the (large) playing pieces, IDK, but its totally off by at least a year or two for any normal 3 yr. old I know. Don't waste your money here.
