Toys and Games Reviews of Candy Land Castle GameCustomer Review: good first game Summary: 4 Stars
This is a very good first game. The fact that it's pretty easy for many 3 year olds is precisely why it's good. This was the first game where my daughter was willing to sit still, wait for her turn, play by the rules. It helped a lot that she already knew the shapes, could operate the candy-cane handle herself, and also that there's no advantage in being an adult; a child is just as likely to win as the child. Plus, unlike counting games like the original candyland or chutes and ladders, the child who can't count properly yet doesn't need to feel that sh'es being taught something or that the adults have it over her. So it's good for teaching the social stuff that goes with game playing (like trying to be a good loser, and a good winner, and taking turns). My daughter did lose interest in it after a few months, it's not something which will keep your children entertained forever. But good while it lasts. (p.s. you do have to be careful about putting the handle back before putting the shapes in, otherwise it gets stuck. kind of annoying, but not that hard to do. otherwise it's pretty well designed.)
Customer Review: Great DURABLE Game for Little Ones Summary: 4 Stars
My 4 year old daughter got this for Christmas. There are four gingerbread men cardboard cards (heavyweight cardboard too). Each gingerbread has a different combination of four shape indentations (One might have an oval, octagon, rectangle and star, while another might have a flower, star, triangle, and rectangle). The game comes with a bunch of plastic (thick - heavy duty) shapes. Basically, you put all the shapes in the chimney of the castle. In turn, each player pulls the candy cane lever. When you pull the lever, a shape comes out. If it matches a shape that your gingerbread needs, you put it on your gingerbread. If it doesn't, you put it back in the chimney. Either way, it's the next player's turn. The first player to get all the shapes they need wins. This is very good if your child is learning colors and shapes. My daughter already knows colors, shapes, etc., but she has a hard time losing. This is great for that too. The game goes fast and winning/losing is very cut and dry. We can play several times in a row. Some times she wins, some times she loses.
Customer Review: Great First Game Summary: 5 Stars
We just got this game for our nearly 3 year old daughter for Christmas. She loves it!!! We have already played it at least 30 times in two days. It is a great first game. It only takes 5 minutes or less to play a game, which is great for little attention spans. It is a wonderful game for children to learn about taking turns and basic "game etiquette". She already knows the basic shapes and colors of the game, so I don't know that it is highly educational in that regard, but she is learning to share and take turns and that is worth a lot.
So far the game seems very sturdy. The platic game pieces are very thick and durable plastic and the gingerbread cookie playing cards are very sturday as well.
My daughter loves to pull the candy cane lever and see the game pieces come shooting out. I imagine that it will be a game that she will grow out of fairly soon, as it is very basic. However, I think that if she does it will have served it's purpose and it will have taught her some important skills to help her move on to more complicated games.
Customer Review: Easy, Educational, Quick game Summary: 5 Stars
I've had this game for over 1 yr now and I have a 3 yr old girl and a 7 yr old boy and this game has been a mainstay of "game night". It is easy to set up and fast paced, so my 3 yr old doesn't get bored with it. It is easily her favorite game and one her brother will actually play with her. It's bright, durable and teaches colors, shapes and counting (you have 3 shapes and still need 1 more to win!!). One person had reviewed that there was nowhere to store the pieces, but that's one of the best things about this game is that everything stores right on the main "castle". The game pieces all fit in the chimney looking chute that the pieces come out of when you pull the handle and the playing cards have a slot in back of the castle where they sit nicely. Over 1 year and amazingly, we still have all of the pieces. My kids pull the handle pretty roughly to get their next game piece out and I'm really surprised that it's so sturdy and hasn't broken yet. Overall, a GREAT bargain and a surprisingly big hit with my kids! I would definately recommend this game.
Customer Review: Great fun for little ones! Summary: 5 Stars
We got this game as a Christmas present for my 2.5 year old daughter. It was the first game that she had enough patience to play from beginning to end! Each player gets a cardboard gingerbread man and has to fill up the 4 spots on the board with matching shapes from the castle. The game is recommended for children 3 and up, but I think it is better for younger children (with an adult). Our 19 month old has already started playing, too. It's been great in helping to teach the kids taking turns and playing fair. They already knew their colors and shapes, but it would be helpful for those concepts, too. Aside from the likelihood of the pieces getting lost (we've lost a red square), I highly recommend this game.
