Toys and Games Reviews of Hamusuta the Happy Hamster in BallCustomer Review: Daughter loves it, but it sucked up her hair! Summary: 3 Stars
My daughter loves hamsters, so I bought her this for Christmas... then she managed to see the box early and squealed, "Hamster!" How could I deny her? So, fine, she got the darn thing early, and she loved it. It went scuttling around the floor in its ball, then she took it out and it scuttled around some more. BUT... when she held it up to get a good look at it, her hair got stuck in the wheels, and the wheels kept going! Her hair got wrapped around and around the wheel, and it seems there was no automatic shut-off for something like this-- there should definitely be some kind of sensor to automatically shut off this toy if something is stuck in its wheels.
So I had a crying, screaming child while I ran over to shut off the toy and unwind her hair from its wheels. You might chalk this up to a freak accident, but considering we've owned the toy for less than 24 hours, I'm afraid that similar events are on our horizon. I think I may force her to keep it inside the ball.
(Update a week later): Funny thing about this: I knew nothing about Zhu Zhu Pets when I bought this. Only after I saw how much she liked this did I go online looking for other toy hamsters, because when I asked what she wanted for Christmas, she said, "Another hamster." I had no idea about the Zhu Zhu craze! This toy is not a Zhu Zhu (someone asked me that in the comments, so I'll put it out here)-- it doesn't make sounds or change directions or any of the additional things they do. But for what it is, it's cute, and a good price. Using only one battery is a nice benefit, too.
Customer Review: Just get a Zhu Zhu Summary: 2 Stars
I bought this as a backup just in case I couldn't find a Zhu Zhu pet for my daughter's Christmas gift. I bought a Zhu Zhu but kept these too because I fugured she could use them together and, quite frankly, it wouldn't have been worth it to pay for shipping to send them back. Well, if you're not into the Zhu Zhu craze, these are OK. Zhu Zhu are much better though. Zhu Zhu's are slightly bigger than these so they do not work with the same toys. Zhu Zhu are also interactive. They know what part of their "house" they are in where these do not. Zhu Zhu's change directions when they bump into something. These are just like a wind up car: once it starts, it just goes. Zhu Zhu's have expandable add-on items meaning add-on houses you buy for them can be hooked together with other parts you may have. These play in the toy they come with and that's it. Both these and Zhu Zhu's have the hair issue. You must keep the hair away from it. That's probably why it's plastered all over them. It is hard to get the hair out because the mechanism is all encased. Since I have both, next time I would just spend the money on a real Zhu Zhu, but for those who don't care, these are fine.
Customer Review: Daughter is Happy...Fooled Waitress! Summary: 5 Stars
My daughter has been bugging me for years to get her a small rodent to love...hamster, mouse, gerbil...you name it. But because of allergies, lack of funds & chronic slobbiness...I'm afraid having an actual living creature cohabitating w/ us would end quickly in a smelly disaster. We saw a few news pieces on the popularity of Zhu Zhu Pets...and despite of the enormous price mentioned, I decided to check Amazon for a better price....well, Hamusuta the Happy Hamster pops up...and because of the price & reviews, I decided to order it for my daughter's 13th birthday. She loves this cute, little, AA-powered critter...even my 15-year-old cooed a little. They snuck it into a restaurant to show it off to our frineds...the waitress and manager almost kicked us out because they thought we had a live hamster rolling around our table. It was hilarious.
I did read the review where someone got their hair tangled into the wheels...so I forwarned my girls...but still had to remove some strands because of it rolling around the carpet. Better to keep it in its ball unless you have immaculate floors!

Customer Review: A surprise REALLY FUN gift for Christmas! Summary: 5 Stars
This gift was intended as a funny, playful item for a 10 year old and to make the adults laugh. We thought it would be a short-lived gift. As a joke, I added the mom's name to the package -- make air-holes to pretend like it was something alive inside (she's not a "pet" person). She opened the bag and was over the moon for this little hamster...she took possession of it, named it and little "Sheila" was the hit of the night...and the next day and the next. The little hamster waddles inside the ball like a little hamster. Pretty soon, all the adults were bonding with "her". Really fun. I don't suspect that the ball would last if kids drop it and are rough with it. But it worked just fine with adults. Installing the battery could be a big challenging for a child--recommend someone older change the battery as the "unit" needs to be gently lifted from the base of the hamster. "Sheila" also can waddle without her ball but she is more apt to pick up lint, loose hair from the floor. We got a kick out of letting her burrow under mounds of wrapping paper. Really cute novelty gift for us adults! Great price & great quick amazon shipping!
Customer Review: Hamusuta VS Zhu Zhu Pet Summary: 4 Stars
My son was given a Zhu Zhu pet for his birthday; I noticed its wheels kept gathering hair from the carpet (I have long hair and we also have a cat, so it's impossible to keep the hair out of the carpet for very long) so I went in search of a hamster ball.
I ordered the Hamusuta hoping that the Hamusuta ball would be suitable for the Zhu Zhu pet. Unfortunately, the ball is too small. The Zhu Zhu pet is distinctly larger (taller and longer) than the Hamusuta. It fits in the ball, but it cannot run in it; the wheels don't touch the surface of the ball. It probably wouldn't have worked even if it did fit, though, because you have to press the Zhu Zhu pet to activate it.
Hamusuta is unlike Zhu Zhu because it has an on/off switch underneath (note: it runs on one AAA battery). It doesn't pause or make hamster sounds like the Zhu Zhu pet; its sole purpose is to run around. But it is actually pretty fun to put it in the ball and just watch it go. I'm sure my toddler will get a kick out of it. For the price, you can't go wrong.
It's a simple but very cute toy.
