So many great reviews. I wonder if any of the favorable reviews were written by friends or family members of the game's developers?
This card game is muddled and messy during real world application. Some specific thoughts:
1. The pile that develops in the center of the table sometimes gets rather big and messy. Hard to see the previous two cards. And you need to see what the previous two cards are in order to yell and slap the pile in case there is a thief, a slamwich, or a double decker.
2. Kids sometimes naturally want to see their card when they are - per the directions - "tossing" into the pile. The "tossing" is messy and creates an awkwardness to the game. The card pile becomes disheveled. And the pile requires constant caretaking.
3. The cards have wonderful graphics and appealing design.
4. The directions DO NOT tell you how many cards to deal out to each player. But the assumption is to deal ALL the cards equally to the players. And place extra cards in center of the table. Just lacked clarity.
5. The directions suggest removing the "Muncher cards" to create a faster, easier and more pleasurable game for younger kids. So why even have the muncher cards?
6. How did this card game get so many wonderful reviews?
Card games and other games that I DO like: Connect 4, Don't break the Ice, Rush Hour, UNO, Yahtzee, Chess, Guess Who, among other games.

Description of Slamwich
2 to 6 Players. Playing time: about 20 minutes. Flip and stack this clever loaf of cards to build slamwiches and double-deckers. Tomato, onion, tomato... slap! Get there first and win the pile. But watch out-you'll have to catch the thief and stop the muncher from stealing the stack of cards. When you're out of cards you're out of the game. The player who collects all of the cards wins. Parental alert: a sharp eye and fast hand will prevail. Play all out, but the kids will beat you every time! Slamwich teaches reading readiness skills, like visual discrimination and sequencing. While kids are flipping and stacking cards, they're actually learning how to recognize a series, make combinations, and anticipate what might happen.Winner of an Oppenheim Best Toy Award, this delightful Gamewright card game is as intellectually tasty as it is hilariously unappetizing. Forty-four cards in the bread-shaped deck are nine separate elements of sandwich fare: one card portrays a lettuce leaf, another shows tomatoes, a third offers a smear of peanut butter, a fourth depicts egg slices, and so on. After the cards are dealt, players lay them down on a central pile (Peanut butter on top of eggs?! Gross!) to construct a card-sandwich that can be won in several different ways. If you see a pair of elements, or a "sandwich" of matching elements--for example, lettuce, pickles, then lettuce again--you slam your hand on the food pile and keep the cards. There are also three "thief" cards to stop (i.e., smack!) and eight devilish "muncher" cards, which demand that you get a pair or a "sandwich" while laying down a specified number of cards or you lose your grub. Slamwich takes about 20 minutes to play, and is deeply pleasurable for young ones, and pretty darned amusing for adults, too. Slamwich is for two to six players.
