Customer Review: My students and I love this game

I work in an inner-city elementary school with students who haven't been exposed to much U.S. geography at home. I am so glad I found this game, because not only is it effectively teaching my students about U.S. geography, but they absolutely love it. They ask me, sometimes beseech me, to play it. I would say that my students probably knew 3-4 state names before playing this game. Now, they can read almost all of the state names off the cards, and they are gaining familiarity with all of them. In addition, this game is reinforcing their map-reading skills, such as finding items on the map and identifying the cardinal directions.
Another thing I love about this game is that it facilitates discussion and the instruction of additional skills. For example, my students have learned the word "replenish" bcause I regularly ask them to "replenish" their set of cards when they've taken one away. I cannot tell you how much I smiled the day my students independently started saying "Replenish!" to each other during the game. With a little creativity, I'm sure teachers and parents can use this game to enhance students' learning in many ways.
I do have one caveat to add to my review: for the maximum benefit, make sure that a trusted adult is playing the game with the students, or is at least monitoring their game. It helps if this adult discourages the shouting out of answers (for example, by enforcing the rule that if someone shouts they will be disqualified). This adult can also help avoid arguments by listening for who said their answer first, and by allowing for ties when appropriate.
