Toys and Games Reviews of Nick Jr. Dora the Explorer Purple Plush Rescue Backpack

Customer Review: Not just for little girls!!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

My 28-month old son is a HUGE fan of Dora. We speak Arabic at home, and Dora taught him to speak English and say several Spanish words. His favorite characters (after Dora) are "Pack-pack" and Map so when his older brother got a new CARS backpack for the new school year and he wanted a bag too, I knew exactly what to get him. This bag was an instant hit! He wears it when we walk his brother to the school bus in the morning, and he takes it to bed with him! It is very durable and very well made. The only reason I gave it 4 stars for durability is because of the way Map is attached to it. With constant pulling on Map, which is normal at this age, the vinyl map is going to tear eventually. I wish they had reinforced the hole where it is tied with a metal ring, or made the map of cloth like the backpack, but otherwise it is an excellent fun toy. It is spacious enough for a couple of toddler items like a sippy cup and small board book or toy, but you do have to add a piece of velcro to keep it closed.

Customer Review: Very cute but one problem....get your sewing needle!
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought this backpack for my 2 1/2 year old daughter for Christmas. She loves it. It is very soft and roomy, and is really cute. She often pulls out the map and pretends to be Dora (it's attached to the pack for safe keeping).
At first sight the magnet closure was pretty secure, and once closed stayed closed until my daughter wanted it open. But the SECOND DAY the magnet on the pack came loose and was lost in the lining of the pack. The one on the flap is still secure.
I located the magnet and sewed it back in place (it looks a little rough but it won't get lost again!) I can't say that I know for sure that my daughter didn't cause this, but since she only had it for 2 days and is pretty easy on her toys, I suspect it is a defect or poor workmanship.
However, it is totally fixable and worth it since this is the only backpack out there that is just like Dora's and not hard plastic. It really is cute and she loves it.

Customer Review: So cute! We love it!

I got this for my 2 year old daughter and was very pleased with the quality and just how cute it is. She loves it. I had a few concerns after reading some reviews, but decided to order it anyway. One reviewer said there was no closure mechanism. The one we received has velcro and closes well. Another reviewer said that things fall out of the backpack. I could only see this happening if it was turned upside-down or packed to the very top. And lastly, one reviewer commented that the backpack is too small. My daughter is petite (34" and 25 lbs) and it fit her just fine and I could see it fitting and 2 or 3 year old perfectly. Overall, it is adorable and functional. The map is very cute and it comes out, but is attached so she can't lose it. I'd say it is a must for any Dora fan. I also think it is priced very well ($8.49).

Customer Review: Great for pretend play/ not practical as is
Summary: 4 Stars

I read the review of the woman who brought the backpack on the plane & thought: "wow, that sounds great." But I should have scrolled down & read the reviews which mention the magnet closure. It opens much too easily -- I cannot imagine taking this on a plane! I guess since it is designed for very young kids, the opening/closing is very easy to do. But my 3 yo daughter wasn't interested in using this for pretend play, she wanted a real backpack to take places.

So (like "Joy's Mommy", who wrote another review) I sewed on some Velcro to keep it shut. She has no trouble opening & closing it with the Velcro. She now puts in some toys & crayons & takes her backpack everywhere & I don't have to worry about things falling out.

I do worry about the plush material -- I am not sure how easy it will be to clean.

Customer Review: Cute but rather small
Summary: 3 Stars

My daughter wanted a Dora backpack for her fourth birthday, so I picked this one because it actually looks like the one on the show. It's probably too babyish for her, but she seems to like it. It comes complete with a map, which is conveniently secured to the backpack itself so you don't lose it. It's cute.

The biggest problem is that it's really too small to hold much. Even a normal size stuffed animal won't fit without being scrunched up a bit. My daughter has a small pair of binoculars that she puts in there, along with a small stuffed animal and a snack to go on her "adventures" in the house. We don't take it out of the house so as not to risk getting it dirty - I don't know how well it would wash out.

For the price, it's a fun toy for younger kids, but it's not much use as an actual backpack.
