Customer Review: Not a scheduled stop! Good and bad!

My wife wanted this game for Christmas, so I bought it, not knowing a thing about it.
I was expecting to be bored when we opened the tin to play with our 9 year old daughter, but I was pleasantly surprised. We had a rocky start. I accidentally snapped one of the flimsy plastic flair pieces from the junction, and we had some difficulty deciphering the instructions. However, after that we had a great time.
I can now say that I like the game of Mexican Train in general. However, this particular set seems to be hit or miss. First, the center piece only made the whistle blowing sound once before it was silent forever (obviously mine was defective as changing the batteries had no effect). Second, the flare pieces (they look like bits of cargo) are pretty flimsy. The stack of barrels snapped off in my hand without me having to expend much effort. Finally, the instructions are a bit vague in places. If you buy this set, be prepared to look for alternate instructions online if you've never played the game before as the instructions included in this set will leave you scratching your head.
On a positive note, the dominoes are nice and sturdy and smooth and they have all of the requisite colored pips. Additionally, there are a good variety of multi-colored translucent train markers. Also, once you have dispensed with the Styrofoam interior, everything can still fit nicely in the tin. You will still have to take care how you stack the dominoes, but you don't have to take too much care.
If you're looking for a game of Mexican Train, I can tell you that it's a fun family game. This set may even have what you're looking for. However, if you're new to the game or looking for a high quality set, you might want to look elsewhere.

The electronic Train Hub toots and chugs when pressed and cleverly holds dominoes in place during game play. Be the first to play all your dominoes or play a domino on the Mexican Train, and you get to press the center domino to hear the Woo Woo locomotive.
