Toys and Games Reviews of Front Porch Classics Dread Pirate Bookshelf GameCustomer Review: High quality game for 2-4 players. Summary: 4 Stars
After seeing this game in a store I decided to check on Amazon for it, glad I did as it was half the store price. As a big board game player this game was a great treat. The heavy metalic game pieces, cloth map, and wood box make it stand out from cheaper toy store shelf games.
The game is fairly straight forward, each player is a pirate and they must use thier ship to trade and attack other players and ports to gain treasure. Once all the jewels are gathered the player with the most wins. Gameplay elements toss in some variables, such as one player able to take the mantle of "Dread Pirate", which comes with perks other players will fight to gain. The rules include some optional game variants too, builing upon the core game.
My biggest complaint is that my game was missing some of the "jewels" for one of the players. It was an easy fix as the jewels are just smushed marbles (a trip to the dollar store replaced the missing pieces). Also there are times that that you may have a question about gameplay that the rules don't address, like if more then one ship can land in the same port at the same time.
Overall I'm happy with the game though, it's nice to see games that aren't all carboard and plastic.
Customer Review: Let's Be Pirates Summary: 4 Stars
I bought this game thinking it was the one I had played one night with friends. This version has a different rule-set from the expansion "Buckaneers Revenge" which uses Mission cards to give purpose to the game play.
This set has metal 'gold coins' instead of plastic... and Metal Ships in copper, bronze, iron and gold tones, Nice bags for the 'booty' and a beautiful storage box, a large wooden 'wind die; to provide a challenge to free movement based on die roll.
I really prefer the expansion, Buckaneer's Revenge and the Mission Cards to this version, however. I'm not sure how I would feel about this game if I hadn't played the expansion first tho.
All in all a fun game for 4 people and easy for non-gamers to pick up.
Aaaargh! :D
Customer Review: Impressive quality Summary: 4 Stars
I was a little reluctant to purchase this game for my son who is only 7 because I thought it might be too difficult for him to enjoy. But since he was fascinated by pirates this year (ie. Lego Pirates), I decided to give it to him for Christmas. We were all impressed with quality and beauty of this toy, including my son. The game calls for 2-4 players but it is best to play with 4. We played as a family and he picked it up very quickly. We stuck to the basic directions, but it includes additional ways to play to make the game more interesting. I suspect he will enjoy playing this game for years to come. P.S. The wooden book box is pretty enough to keep out on display.
Customer Review: Best Pirate Game Ever! Summary: 5 Stars
i've always had a thing with pirates, so this review's gonna' be a little biased, but anyways;
i've only been able to play it a few times, but it's always fun as, a barrel of pirate monkeys ransacking and pillaging other mankey's barrels... or something to that effect,
the rules seems a little complicated at first but after playing a round or two, it's pretty simple;
the game includes wind changes, pillaging ports, sea battles, hazards at sea, mutinies, a very open style of play where no two games play out the same;
if it seems too easy or too hard, it's easy to modify the rules.
exelent game, try it, you'll like it
Customer Review: Set your sails for adventure Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this game for my 15 year old for christmas and she loves it. It has different levels and modes of play and lots of interesting pirate lore. Every game is just a little different so it isn't just going around the same game board again and again. The playing pieces are made of metal, the dice are wood, and the treasures gleam enticingly. The cloth playing "board" has
the look and feel of an old world chart. Playing the game is fun because you never know what turn the dice will take, and what fate the seas have in store for you. This game is perfect for pirate enthusiasts, young and old.
