Toys and Games Reviews of The Farmer SaysCustomer Review: Good to see this still around Summary: 5 Stars
I've been observing some toy stores for a developmental psych class I'm taking and it's been fun to see some old toys that I remember from ages ago.
I had a "Farmer Says" back in the day. I got it in 1988 at age two and played with it for a few years after that. This one keeps the charm of the old one yet has a few significant improvements:
1. More stuff. Last I checked "Farmer Says" didn't have as much variety as this one.
2. Quiz mode. You can check your understanding now!
3. The big one: no more pull string! Anyone who had a See 'n' Say in the 1980s knows about these. They could get pulled too far and cause problems. The lever that replaces it appears to work much better!
The other thing I like about this toy is that there is no character propaganda on it. I get sick of seeing Dora the Explorer or Spiderman on every single toy that's out there.
Highly recommend this one for anyone with 2-5 year olds.
Customer Review: Good fun, not super interesting Summary: 3 Stars
I bought this as a Christmas present for my 5 month old. At this time, she didn't like it, but then at 7 months, it is more interesting.
It really doesn't teach much in the way of content except farm animals. One function it does have is that you have to make the arrow point at whatever animal it asks you, and then pull the lever again. So, there it teaches you more, but in order for you to play that game, it has to land on the square that asks you to look for an animal.
This really only holds children's interests for a few minutes at a time, and I feel that although it is a good toy for what it is, it's not a great value because it's unnecessary and doesn't teach anything too important.
Also, for younger than 1 year, I feel it's frustrating and hard for the child to use because it is lightweight but you have to pull down hard on the lever, causing the toy to fall over if it's not pulled straight down.
Customer Review: Not Loud Enough Summary: 3 Stars
The See 'n Say lets our 2 year old choose from 16 different animals, 2 animal songs or the "animal quiz." My son especially likes the song option which either plays "Old McDonald" or "Farmer in the Dell." I like how this new model has more animals than the older version. This version is smaller and slightly easier for little hands to pull. This new model runs on batteries as opposed to the wind-up/unwind kind with the harder-to-pull lever or string.
The major problem with this toy is that it simply isn't loud enough. The spinning wheel drowns out the sound of the animals. It's not even that the spinner is too loud. The toy is just too quiet even in a room with no other noise. It would be impossible to hear it in a daycare or some other louder setting.
Overall, it's a good toy for teaching animals and sounds. The pictures are bright and vivid. I just wish it was louder.
Customer Review: Good fun for a little one, but loud! Summary: 4 Stars
My mom bought this product for my son as a Christmas gift. Hearing the different animal sounds and music always makes him smile, and he loves playing with it. Even though he's too young yet to pull the lever for himself, he will bring it to me when he wants to hear the sounds. I like the "quiz" feature that asks "Can you find the animal that makes [x] sound?" and think it will be a good learning tool when my son is older. But---and this is my only complaint---it is a really LOUD toy. There is no way to adjust the volume and I find myself wanting to cover up the speaker (located on the front of the toy) when my son brings it to me. Given that a lot of young children hold toys that make sounds up to their ears, I think this toy needs to be much quieter.
Customer Review: As annoying as any battery toy... but my daughter loves it! Summary: 4 Stars
We don't have very many battery toys because they drive mom and dad crazy... but we had to make an exception for this one. My 20 month old daughter spotted it at a playgroup, ran around with it the entire time, protested whenever another kid wanted to use it, pulled the lever and shouted animal names and sounds, and danced every time a song played. Apparently it was best she got her own! The toy is a huge hit in our house and even though she already knows all the animals I doubt she will lose interest anytime soon.
For the reviewer who said it was too loud: I agree, but then I find most battery toys too loud. At our house we use some simple invisible tape over the speaker. Our daughter never notices it and it cuts down on the sound greatly.
