Toys and Games Reviews of The Farmer Says

Customer Review: Fun for babies too
Summary: 5 Stars

The recommended age for See 'n Say is 18 months, but we bought it anyway. Our seven-month old recently started enjoying animal noises we'd make for him. I tried this toy for him in the store and was greeted with the same smile and giggle we got from quacking like a duck for him at home. He is probably far from learning how to pull the handle himself, but we do it for him and he watches with delight. Each night, we read him a few stories before bed and we use See 'n Say the Farmer Says as if it were a book. We hold it in front of my son and pull the handle a few times to hear animal sounds and he thinks he just heard a fabulous tale.

This toy has a half ring that can be flipped back and forth to display different animals. There are 16 animals, which are named and make their individual sounds when the handle is pulled. There is also a song sticker that plays Old MacDonald had a Farm or The Farmer in the Dell. And there is a quiz sticker that asks you to find the animal based on the name of the animal or its sound. The farmer is on an arrow in the middle and you point it toward whichever sticker you want and then pull the handle.

I only have two minor complaints with this toy. The handle sometimes sticks on the way back up and makes a soft grinding sound. Also, the volume is a bit loud and there is no volume control button. Overall, it's a great toy.

Customer Review: Son loves this
Summary: 5 Stars

I'm a little confused by some of these other reviews. We bought this for our son when he was 6 months old because he loved it when we made animal sounds for him. We saw it in Walmart, pulled the lever and he loved it. The sound is clear, ours has never sounded muffled or like static. You can completely understand what is being said (which only includes 2 different phrases...for example "the cow says mooo" and "this is a cow. mooo.") The spinning of the arrow does not take away from the the "talking." I'm not sure what some people would expect this toy to do. The 2 songs are nice, our son loves listening to Old McDonald and each time, a new animal is chosen as part of the song. Obviously, at 7 months old now, our son is too young for the quiz part, but I think it is a nice addition. We play with this product every day and we've never had a problem with the handle sticking or any of the sounds not matching where the arrow points. I guess the only thing I would say that might have the slightest negative point to it would be that some of the animal sounds can be loud. All the animals sound realistic except the mouse and the bunny. Plus, the owl is NOT a Barn Owl as the toy suggests and a Barn Owl does not make the sound the toy suggests. Overall, the toy is a HUGE improvement from the old versions and I would definitely recommend it to friends.

Customer Review: poor sound quality
Summary: 2 Stars

I purchased this toy for my 10 month old. I agree with a few other reviewers that the sound quality is poor. It sounds like a radio station that is not quite on the correct frequency coming from really poor speakers. In addition, the volume isn't loud enough (perhaps because of the muffled sound). After pulling the lever, I have a very difficult time understanding what it is saying until after the arrow stops spinning. By the time the arrow stops, the phrase is 1/2 over and you've missed the first part of the sentence. I even have this complaint when there isn't any background noise. Imagine if there were other kids playing in the room or the dishwasher running.

If the sound quality were better, the words more easily understood, and it had a volume control; I would have been willing to pay twice as much, and would have given it 4-5/5 stars. I also think it would be nice if it described the animal on which the arrow stops, instead of the animal on which the arrow starts when you pull the lever. Too bad there isn't an option for a higher quality one. Perhaps there is, and I just don't know about it.

My mother-in-law purchased this for my nephew. She had the same complaints about the sound. Wish I'd talked to her first.

Customer Review: not so pleased
Summary: 2 Stars

My son recieved this as a Christmas gift, and I was so excited for him to get it as he is learning his animal sounds. Unfortunatly I was dissapointed with this toy. I grew up with the original see and say and this new version just doesnt live up to its predesessor. The age limit for this starts at 18 months which is appropriate but if the child does not pull the lever down hard and all the way they dont get any sound or song... it just spins. Also, the sounds were very quick, you barely get to hear it like you do the old fashioned version. The old version would say something like "the cow says mooooooooo...." the new revamped version is quick saying "the cow says moo..." some of the animal sounds arent even very accurate. I also did not enjoy the quiz option... if the child is not old enough to answer the toys question it just keeps asking it. That aspect of it is definitly something an older child would enjoy. Ill definitly be searching for the old fashioned version... why change a good thing?
