Toys and Games Reviews of Fisher-Price Ocean Wonders Soothe and Glow Seahorse Blue

Customer Review: Not just for baby
Summary: 5 Stars

My daughter never cared for this toy, until she was around a year and a half. She could turn it on purposefully then, and turn it back off by holding down the belly for a few moments. She thought the power to turn it on and off was pretty great. We started using it after reading bedtime stories. I wedge it under a pillow to block the light, or shove the whole thing under the covers. We've used it every single night, multiple times for months now, and the batteries are finally low enough to make a few notes wonky.

Side effect: I am now addicted to seahorse. I frequently steal it from her bed so I can use it to lull myself to sleep! It's just distracting enough to stop my mind from wandering, but soothing so I fall asleep. I'm actually buying another one for myself, but I'm sure after our second child arrives she'll take it over.

It may not work for little babies, it's bright and loud compared to the womb, but my toddler is a magic seahorse addict.

Customer Review: Better for older kids, but for a baby who hasn't learned to self soothe...
Summary: 3 Stars

this won't do a lick of good. The music is wonderful and when my son is in the mood, he'll lay there and listen to it. But, I have to admit that my son hasn't learned to self-soothe and that as soon as he can't see me anymore, he starts to cry, whether he was enjoying the music of not.
My two year old nephew LOVED it, and was constantly stealing it. He co-sleeps with his parents and this actually helped him start sleeping on his own--plus at his age, he can start the music again when it stops or stop it when he doesn't want to listen anymore.

The velcro back closure doesn't stay closed and it's annoying to have to open it everytime you want to adjust the volume.
Anyway, for less than $15.00 it definitely not completely useless, but I didn't find it to be the miracle everyone else seems to have. But, again, it could be that my little one is not sleep trained yet and if he was, it may be more effective. We'll see!

Customer Review: You can turn off the music easily
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased this seahorse around January 2008. I almost returned it because, although it's nice that the music plays for around 5 minutes (we timed 6 1/2 minutes), I didn't want to keep it if there wasn't a way to easily turn off the music without it playing all the way through. There is no mention anywhere on the box or in the manual that you can turn off the music other than by going inside the velcro and turning off the on/off switch (and who would want to do that and wake up the sleeping baby with the loud velcro?) Then, by accident, we found that if you press and hold the seahorse's chest for several seconds the music will gently fade and turn off. I called Fisher-Price and let them know so hopefully they'll add this information to the box and manual soon. It's a bit "head heavy" which makes it a little hard to handle. It's not machine washable like the original Gloworm, only "surface washable". Great product overall. It's so darn cute.

Customer Review: My Son's Lovey
Summary: 5 Stars

When my son got tall enough to reach (and pull down) his crib mobile, my mom bought this for him so that he would have music in his crib. He is now 19 months old and he is very attached to it. He calls it "Lovey." Lovey is an integral part of our nighttime routine. Lovey chooses a bedtime story; my son chooses a bedtime story. Lovey gets his teeth brushed; my son gets his teeth brushed, etc.
When we put our son to bed, he's content as long as he has Lovey. Even if he's not quite ready to sleep, he'll go down easily and listen to the music until he falls asleep. When he wakes up in the morning, I can let him stay in the crib for 15-20 minutes because he has Lovey to talk to. This gives me a few minutes to myself first thing in the morning, which helps me ease into my day, and I can be a better mom.
The batteries last a long time considering how much my son plays with this toy. I have to change them every three to four weeks.

Customer Review: sleep aid
Summary: 5 Stars

This seahorse is adorable! it is soft and the perfect size for my 9 month old. we use this as part of our bedtime ritual; we bring it to his room and he holds it wile i rock him then I put it in his crib with him and he just drifts off to the music (I know you shouldnt put toys in a crib but he is old and strong enough to move around it). sometimes at night I hear the music going and yet he doesnt make a sound so I know he uses it to soothe himself! He will also push the belly to make it play when he wakes up in the morning- buying me an extra few minutes to get ready lol! the belly is very easy to push for the music which is great for him. the music is also very very soothing and the light is a nice glow. i very highly recommend this seahorse!
i forgot to add that this price is the highest around! you can get this at target for 10.00 and at walmart for 11.00 so if those places are close by- i wouldnt pay this price for it.
