Toys and Games Reviews of Fisher-Price Ocean Wonders Soothe and Glow Seahorse BlueCustomer Review: Thank Goodness for this Seahorse! Summary: 5 Stars
We bought the Soothe & Glow Seahorse when my daughter was just a few months old, and though she wasn't too interested in it at first, she now LOVES it, and has to have it to go to sleep (she is 20 months old now). It used to be really difficult to get her to sleep at night -- we played music, rocked her, gave her a stuffed animal, etc.. and it would take the better part of an hour to finally get her to sleep. When she was 13 months old, we re-introduced her to the seahorse, and she started to fall asleep within minutes, hardly ever protesting! We lay her down in her crib, give her the seahorse and her dolly, and she smiles and closes her eyes -- it was a total turn-around. She also is staying asleep longer, rarely waking up in the middle of the night. If she does wake up, she turns on the seahorse and goes back to sleep.
I rave about the seahorse to every new parent I know, and it is now my standard baby shower gift. Every one I've given it to has told me how much their baby loves it. I can't say enough good things about the Soothe & Glow seahorse. It's enabled our whole family to get better sleep. Thank goodness for the Soothe & Glow Seahorse!
Customer Review: It really is a "magical seahorse"! Summary: 5 Stars
When I was pregnant I always read about this "magical seahorse" on message boards, so of course I had to check it out and I ended up buying one up before our baby arrived. The first couple of months my daughter didn't pay it much attention (she was a newborn, she didn't pay anything much attention), but around 3 months is when it really started to work it's "magic". By 3 months I started trying to get my daughter to fall asleep on her own as opposed to being nursed to sleep at night. This seahorse did the trick! I would put her in her crib groggy, turn the seahorse on where she could see it, and she would stare at it and fall asleep within a couple of minutes. She is now 6 months old and it's become more of a toy for her. I don't think she actually needs it to fall asleep anymore, but I still put it on for her. Now when I go in to check on her during naps, I find her sitting up in her crib playing with it and she can even turn it on herself. It's a great product, at a great price, and I would highly recommend it to anyone. Also, excellent battery life. We've only had to change the batteries once or twice in six months. You won't regret this purchase!
Customer Review: Better 2nd time around! Summary: 5 Stars
My 5yo still picks up this seahorse occasionally. He's had it since he was about 18mo. Now my 2yo loves it and carries it around everywhere with him. The velcro in the back is a bit easy for kiddos to open, but there's nothing small or dangerous for them to get into as a result. The lower volume is perfect to help him drift to sleep, and sometimes if he's "done" or if he accidentally rolls over onto it in the middle of the night, he knows to just push the belly to turn it right back off-- he doesn't HAVE to sit through the 7-8 minutes of music if he doesn't want to. Batteries seem to last long enough. In four years I can only remember having to change them maybe three or four times. The musical/battery box removes easily enough to machine wash the plush part without damaging any electronics.
Some of the silkier materials are beginning to fray, but after 4-5 years and 2 kids loving on it, it's refreshing that it's held up as well as it has!
I almost wish they made more colours/animals in this line, so I could get a few and the kids would have a variety to play/sleep with.
Customer Review: Cute, soothing first toy for baby! Summary: 4 Stars
My son has had this since birth and once he started sleeping in the crib we used the music and light to soothe him. He's almost four months old now and knows the drill: in bed, kiss goodnight and then I press the belly of the seahorse and he relaxes off to dreamland.
*Batteries that came with it just died after 2 months of continuous use, I imagine better batteries will yield a longer life in the toy.
*The music is great! I think it is very pretty and like the bubbling water sounds that are in the background.
*I wish it had the option to play longer and possibly a medium setting to the volume.
*This isn't really for young infant snuggling; I can see my son doing more of that at 6+ months, but it is not plush/pillowy feeling toy due to the hard plastic mechanism inside.
*This was the first toy I ever bought my son (spur of the moment because of great sale price at a local store) and I'm so glad I did!
*A great baby shower gift as it is something that could be used from newborn age.
Customer Review: Cute but not cuddly Summary: 3 Stars
I ordered this because my sleep sheep broke. I loved that sheep because you could vary the length the white noise played. This seahorse is on for only about 7 minutes or so... It does have 2 loudness settings, super soft or super loud... nothing in between. I thought it was going to be a bit smaller. It's too large for my 4 month old to cuddle with. When I put it close to him he gets a little scared. It seems pretty durable. The outer casing comes off for washing, but not sure how the plastic tummy will do in the machine.
The control to switch it to louder/softer is really hard to reach as it's inside the casing. So you have to rip open the velcro and squeeze your finger around the side and feel for the tiny switch. Trying to see what you are doing is near impossible. Not something you want to do with a sleeping baby next to you!
The music being played is quite nice, but there is a scratchy pause between each tune kind of like an old radio static.
I think there are better musical sleep aids out there. This just has a high cuteness factor.
