Toys and Games Reviews of Fisher-Price Ocean Wonders Soothe and Glow Seahorse Blue

Customer Review: 5 year old still sleeps with his seahorse!
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this for my son when he was almost 2. His pricey lights/music soother that hung on his crib died a squeaky death and I wasn't about to spend $40-$50 on something similar, then I found this seahorse toy! (I too was looking for the old-fashioned gloworm but liked this better). It has soothing music, and it's not too loud (IT _DOES_ HAVE A VOLUME SWITCH INSIDE). Was great for creating that "it's time for sleep" mood for naptime too, when he napped.

He's never played with his seahorse like a toy, but that's not what it's for...it's a night time soother for going to sleep, and that's how my son uses it. He turns it on after kisses and the lights go out and hugs it close. He even named his seahorse. When we moved him out of the nursery to his big boy room and bed at 4, the seahorse was one of the few toys he took with him, and the only one he still uses every night.

Also, this thing is pretty efficient with the batteries, we replace them a couple times a year.

I can't comment on how he would have liked it as an infant (when most people will pay anything to get their kids to sleep), but I will be buying another seahorse for his little brother due next month. At ~$10, it's definately worth it.

Customer Review: Cry it out a little less
Summary: 5 Stars

I should start by saying I have never written a review for anything, ever. I purchased this seahorse because of all of the great reviews I read so I felt that I needed to share how much love it. My son was 9 months old when I purchased it. He had colic as an infant so was never a great sleeper but between 5 and 8 months slept great. All night, no problems. I pinched myself every morning. Then, at 9 months he decided he did not want to sleep through the night anymore. He would wake up from a deep sleep screaming. We spent about two weeks going into his room or letting him sleep in our bed. Then we (I) decided that cry it out was the only option. It was really harsh and he is a real screamer. The first few nights he screamed for about 45 minutes (this is sometime between 2 and 4 am). We were not sleeping, he was not sleeping. I felt like he needed some help so I got him the seahorse. It has been nothing short of miracle worker for us. It is like he is narcoleptic now. He can be standing up and crying and you put that seahorse in and he collapses and goes to sleep. The first few times we actually went in to check on him. I am certain that this is not the typical response but for the price this thing is totally worth a try.

Customer Review: FINALLY, but at 16 months
Summary: 4 Stars

So when I first got this toy, my little guy was 13 months old. He loved it, but it was stimulating and DID not serve the purpose of soothing him to sleep. In fact, he would get super excited about the light and start waking up/playing with the toy (usually trying to get under a sheet and holding the seahorse above him so that it could be a "lamp" under his tent).

So we played with this seahorse before he went to bed, and even used the seahorse as a flashlight in his room to find things. It definitely served a purpose.

However, JUST TODAY, at the 16 mo age, my guy decided to hug said horse to sleep. I left his room for about 10 minutes (whereupon he was crying his head off), and lo and behold, sleep. We'll see if this turns out to be a sleep aid or even his lovey. Maybe it's a one time thing. Who knows. But I do like the toy b/c it is cute and soothing, at least it would serve a purpose of being a soothing light and song for the before-bed routine. Whether it will help him to fall asleep or stay asleep is another question. However, it's better than Scout b/c I worry little guy will squeeze one of Scout's arms and legs (we have 3 Scouts) and wake up by mistake!

Customer Review: Really cute - but don't expect miracles!
Summary: 3 Stars

I bought this after reading so many dozens of rave reviews. My then 7-month-old daughter had become bored with her mobile. I didn't want to throw money away on a 2nd one, so I thought this could be the perfect cost-effective substitute. When I introduced it to her, she was mildly impressed at best. I put it in her crib with her every night, and while she would stare at its glowing belly for a few moments, she always quickly lost interest and started to cry. At times, she even grabbed it and pushed/threw it away from her. The mobile I had wanted to replace did a better job of soothing her! Anyway, that was okay, because I still thought she'd like it as a toy, but it became a toy with baggage. Every time I pressed its tummy during playtime and the music would start, she would immediately start crying! It became a trigger for bad bedtime memories, so now it sits collecting dust on a shelf.

All-in-all, this is a really cute toy that plays really cute music (MUCH more appealing than most kid-toy-tunes). Quality is high, too. I only give it 3 stars to make the point that it is not innately a miracle toy. It is JUST a toy and whether it holds amazing powers or not just depends on your child.

Customer Review: A great lovey

"Seamore", as we refer to the glowing sea horse in my house, has been apart of my son's life from the time he got home from the hospital (10 months now). At first, we used Seamore in my son's co-sleeper. Both my husband and I like a dark room so no night-lights. So when my son would wake up, we would turn on Seamore to provide the perfect amount of light to safely pick up my son, change him, feed him... Fast forward 10 months later, and we turn Seamore on as we put our son in his crib and walk away. After a minute or two, our son is asleep, cuddled up with Seamore. Sometimes in the night, we will hear Seamore bubbling away still cuddled in our son's arms. In the morning, we find our son holding Seamore and standing up in his crib waiting impatiently for us. Unfortunately, this has led to Seamore's demise from falling on the floor so much (my son will accidentally drop him since he is kind of heavy). So we are buying Seamore II.

The only thing I would change is to increase (or have the option) the time of music. 5 minutes is a little short when we were sleep training and seemed to frustrate my son until he got the hang of turning him back on
