Toys and Games Reviews of Fisher Price Learning HomeCustomer Review: Great Investment in your sanity time Summary: 5 Stars
We got this and the Laugh and Learn farm for my son (or so I thought). The toy is pretty amazing and I found myself getting very into it.
What I don't like - I'll have to get back to you on this one b/c it's pretty amazing - if I had to pick something, maybe the price tag - it's a little steep. One thing that's curious - there is a dog bowl - but no dog character or toy - so that seems weird.
What I love about it:
There are a ton of activities - the dial on top that goes from "day to night" and has funny sounds, opening the closing of the door (creak and door slam noise), the "rain spout" the clock, the radio, door bell, opening/closing the window light switch, mail box...so much more... All the little activities are awesome. They teach "cause and effect" - real life items.
My son is at that point where he's interested in "real" - opening/closing our doors isn't safe, opening/closing FP Home door - totally safe - no worries of getting his fingers stuck- plus it makes funny noises - our real house doors don't do that. He also LOVED crawling in and out of the door - too cute.
Other things I like - there are all the bells and whistles that have been pretty standard with FP toys - they're also super durable. I definitely do not have buyers remorse and feel that I'm getting a sound investment. This product is also scaleable - as my son grows we can "learn" about the real life objects, the difference between night and day, cause and effect (open/close), why people ring door bells, knocking on the door, radio, windows, sing songs.
If you're debating between this vs the FP Laugh and Learn Farm - then get the Home. It has a few more activities and more extra pieces. If you're not price tag conscious - get them both. They're AWESOME!
UPDATE 9/29/2010:
My son is nearing 2 and he still LOVES this toy. We have this sitting in the hallway in a nook and often times we find him crawling through the door and sitting behind it to relax and have his beverage. IT'S HILARIOUS! He'll just be chilling behind there and if we want to talk to him, we have to ring the doorbell, and if he's in the mood, he might open the door to say hi. We aren't allowed to talk to him over the toy, he'll just ignore us. SO SO SO SO SO SO GLAD we got this. (Surprisingly, I think we've only had to change the batteries once on this). The nook has now become "his place" and where he goes to get away form the hustle and bustle of being a toddler.
Customer Review: ~*~Great for interacting w/ your child, child playing alone or several children~*~ Summary: 5 Stars
When my girls turned 6 months old they were getting tired of their boring "baby" toys so I searched & found this had a ton of Great Reviews. I actually found mine used, in excellent condition for a fraction of the price.
After I disinfected it & put everything where it went I thought my girls would have a blast. They looked at it a little bit but the only thing they were interested in was chewing on the loose pieces it came with. This went on daily for several weeks and my husband and I thought we had wasted our money...Boy were we WRONG!
I think around 9 months my girls started getting interested in this toy. It really is a toy that "grows" with your child as they learn new things.
So this is basically the order of how my husband and I played with this toy...ER, I mean how my daughters played with it. Ok, I'll be honest. Both my husband and I play with this toy as well ; ) but this toy is WONDERFUL for being able to interact with your child.
When they first started actually playing with it, they could only do the basic things but it is so fun to see how they learn & figure out how to do the other things as well.
Like at first they found it hilarious to shut the mailbox when we opened it.
Loved to find a piece of mail or any toy we put in the mailbox for them to find.
Shut the window when we opened it.
Close or open the door.
Turn the light off when we turned it on.
Then little by little they learned to open the mailbox, open the window, turn the light on, turn the numbers on the house or clock. Push the buttons on the radio. Pull the shapes out of the shape holes stuck on the house after we put them in.
And then they were trying to put the shapes back in the holes & are just learning how to do that. There are other things as well but I'd end up typing a novel.
This is one of the toys that I will always suggest to people, both my girls play with it everyday. It is something that will help them learn, you can have fun playing with them, they'll have a blast, etc.
Like my girls are 13 months old now and if I hold them by a light switch and say either "turn it on" or "turn it off" and they will either turn it on or off which is great since I normally am holding both girls I don't have a free hand to do it myself!
Shop around for prices because as I am writing this BabiesRus has this WAY cheaper.
Customer Review: AMAZING toy that can grow with your child!!! Summary: 5 Stars
Of all the toys my daughter owns, this one gets played with the most. She plays with it multiple times every day. This is a really cute toy - it is basically a wall, one side representing the outside and one side the inside. The outside has a flower in a pot, a window, a door that can be opened for crawling through, rotating house numbers, a doorbell and a porch light, a mailbox with little letters that you can place inside, a drain spout with 3 raindrop balls, and a cylinder thingy with a picture of a bug and a rabbit. The inside is yellow and has a "radio", phone book, light switch and light, a space to collect plastic letters, a little stool for sitting, and a clock. The toy has 2 modes - a talking learning mode and a musical mode. My daughter enjoys both.
My daughter is 10 months old and she can do many things with it - she knows how to press the doorbell, turn off the lights, roll the cylinder in the garden, open and close the window shades, rotate the house numbers, operate the radio, and open the door to crawl through it.
There are several activities she has yet to master - the mailbox is hard for her to open, she hasn't shown interest in dropping the balls down the drain pipe, and she does not know how to use the shape sorter. However, with time she will learn those activities too. Our 2 year old neighbor also loves to play with this toy. Since it is two sided, both children can play with the toy without them getting in each other's way.
We also have the little phone that matches - I wish the house included a phone too! Overall, this toy is a great investment. It has tons of activities and it grows with your child. I can see it being fun for imaginative play later on.
UPDATE: I wrote this review more than 2 years ago. Since then, we've had another child, who is now 19 months old. My second daughter LOVES this house too. The activities are a lot of fun for her and she has grown with them. She loves to crawl through the door and use the shape sorter. She also loves to dance to the music as well. Needless to say, this toy is extremely durable. We have had it set up in the playroom for more than two years - we only put it away for a short while when we ran out of space at our old house. We have never had any problems with it and we have managed to keep track of all of the small pieces (shapes, balls, key, letters).
Customer Review: pretty good Summary: 3 Stars
I bought this toy for my 12 month old. It was simple to assemble and only took about 10 minutes. Once the toy was turned on, it almost seemed to do too much. Sometimes my kids would rather keep it turned off and play. The songs are cute but can get a little annoying after a while. The sound effects are great! Especially the opening and closing of the door which works perfectly with the door movements. That impressed me most. Although my baby can walk, she loves to crawl back and fourth through the door over and over. I think she feels in control when she can shut the door on her sister. And there's no way to pinch fingers in this door! I think it would have been nice if the clock could actually give the correct time as the hands are moved. It just makes ticking noises. However, the house numbers on the opposite side do tell the correct numbers when they are turned. This is a neat feature and can reassure my 2 1/2 year old when she names her numbers. My 7 year old announced that we were missing the phone. I questioned it and she showed me an empty spot where the phone goes. This has to be bought separately. Also, there is a spot for the Laugh & Learn dog to sit next to the dog dish. She also informed me that the dog needed to be bought too for the toy to have it's maximum value of fun. I wish that the key was attached to the door like in the picture on the box, but mine wasn't. (Another thing my 7 year old pointed out!) I'm also afraid the colored shapes will get misplaced too. This toy is action-packed with lots of activities so it will hold a child's attention for quite a while. I do think this toy is slighty overpriced but overall, the toy has more positives than negatives and will provide a lot of fun-filled memories.
Customer Review: Great fun and entertaining! Summary: 5 Stars
We recently purchased this gift for our 10 mo. old daughter for Christmas. Our friends have this toy, and all three of our kids (4 y/o, 2 y/o, and 10 mo old) always run straight for it when we are visiting there. Christmas morning, and everyday since proved to be no different. This has entertainment value for many different age groups.
My 10 mo. old particularly likes the door. This is a great door to open and close, and no fingers are getting pinched in the process. She likes to open and close the mailbox. She pulls up to the toy, and it is very sturdy. She loves teething on the mail. She doesn't quite get the ball gutter yet, and doesn't have the dexterity for putting the shapes in the right places. She loves to play with her brothers when they are playing with this toy.
The 2 y/o can do all the activities on this toy. And he does them, over and over and over. He too loves the idea of the mailbox (as it reminds him of the mailbox on Blues Clues).
My 4 y/o can think of tons of ideas to play when using this toy. I wouldn't have bought it just for my 4 y/o, but he does find it to be fun too.
It took maybe 45 min. - 1 hour to put together. I liked that the decals were already on the toy. We bought it for $45 right before Christmas. Before then it was running $55-60. After Christmas clearance still has it at $45.
I was leary that my 10 mo. old wouldn't truly enjoy this house, but she really does. I feel the play to price value is very fair. Definitely a good investment when it comes to a well used toy. And we have ALOT of toys, so I'm speaking from experience.
