Toys and Games Reviews of Fisher Price - Learn Thru Music System With CartridgeCustomer Review: Awesome Toy Summary: 5 Stars
I have never written a review for any product before but it is driving me crazy to see all the complaints about this toy so I have to say something...
I got this for my daughter in July '04 when she was 2 1/2 years old. We were driving from FL to PA with NO TV in the car, so I needed something not too big or with too many pieces that she could hold on her lap. I knew she loved music and that she didn't understand the concept of her big brothers' leap pad yet. She had one of those Barney computers with the cards but she didn't quite get that yet either because the response time was so slow and you could only play one way so she would get impatient (she likes it now).
Anyway, she had never seen it in the store but she absolutely LOVED it from the first minute she got it. She was at the perfect age to understand how to operate it without any help from me (I was driving!). She could handle the cartridges and microphone and play with the questions and answers all by herself. The screen is not too dark for her and the best thing is she could play it IN THE DARK because it lit up!
The sensitivity of the touch screen is awesome. It senses my daughter's touch accurately and responds quickly.
There IS A VOLUME SWITCH on the back which can be switched from loud to soft. However she insists on the loud setting because the soft setting was too soft to hear over her noisy brothers, my radio, and the car engine.
When the cartridge is removed, the screen can be touched and individual notes of songs can be played or the music button pushed and a whole song will play accompanied by light patterns. This was an awesome surprise because I didn't remember seeing that feature described anywhere on the box.
I gave her 2 cartridges on the way to PA and 2 on the way back to FL - Elmo Scavenger Hunt, Count with Elmo, Dora Barnyard, and Barney with the transportation (train bus bike etc shapes colors and counting wheels etc). All of the cartridges have been great. She bought the Dora Music Festival with her Christmas money and she will get Barney Lets Share the Day for her birthday in January. She has learned her alphabet, counting in english and spanish, and tons of songs, other spanish vocabulary, critical thinking, and much much more. In my opinion, the only thing Fisher Price has done wrong is they are too slow coming out with new cartridges. I can't wait for the new Pooh and Princess cartridges!
This toy has stood the test of time for appeal - my daughter has not lost interest at all and she will be 3 in January. We keep it in the car and she asks for it all the time. It has also been durable - stepped on by 3 kids, dropped, thrown, carried by the microphone cord, same buttons pushed over and over and over and over and over (you know how that is). We have had it 7 months and it still works like the day we bought it. The touch screen has been scratched, however, and maybe FP could make that plastic screen a little harder, but maybe that would affect the touch sensativity? It doesn't bother my daughter.
One other drawback (only in my opinion not my daughter's) is that if you hold the microphone too close to the unit in a certain way, you will get a high pitched squeal which irritates my sons and I to no end. My daughter thinks it's a hoot to make a noise that bothers her brothers so!
Last, I want to address the issue of pages getting stuck halfway or the songs not corresponding to the page you are on. THIS IS A BATTERY PROBLEM! CHANGE THE BATTERIES when this happens. Because our toy gets high use, this happens once every 4 to 6 weeks. When the batteries are low, they will still be strong enough to play the lights and music when the cartridge is removed, but they will not be strong enough to turn the pages properly.
I would not reccommend this toy for an 18 month old because they would not understand how to use it fully and would stop playing with it before they came to an age where they would get the MOST out of it. I think many manufacturers put ages that are too young on toys. This toy is better for age 2 and up. I wouldn't hesitate to buy it for a 3 year old too. I like it better than a first leap pad or power touch because it is more visual with the lights and more musical and there are no paper pages to tear. Even my 6 1/2 year old twin boys play with it for short whiles when they grow bored of their leap pad or pixter (although is is much much too easy for them and my daughter complains LOUDLY about sharing)!
There...I think I've said everything I could say about this toy except BUY IT! IT'S AN AWESOME TOY!
