Toys and Games Reviews of Fisher-Price Laugh & Learn Smart Bounce & Spin Pony

Customer Review: Fisher Price Laugh & Learn Smart Pony
Summary: 5 Stars

I LOVE this product! I thought the Bounce and Spin Zebra was great, but this takes it up a notch!

The kids really like this, all the way from 12 months (assisted, in some cases) to 4 years old (I Know, over the age/weight limit). They find it both entertaining and educational and whether we let them use it with the TV or alone, it has provided many hours of fun and exercise. I love that this item can be abused with all of the energy of a toddler/preschooler and last much longer than me! I do recommend assisting the smaller children and NOT leaving them unattended on it.

The module for the TV is easy to use and has various levels for each child based on their abilities to understand. Our 20 month old really likes the alphabet zoo and while our 4 year old finds it a bit simplistic, she still enjoys the entertainment portion. Its a great way for the two to interact with each other and they really seem to enjoy it.

As with the zebra, I would recommend putting it on a non-slip surface (rug, grip, etc) if you do not have carpeting. It will move around as they bounce on it and it could mar hardwood or laminate floors. Also, it has a large footprint which is great for safety purposes, but not so great if you were hoping to regain prime real estate on your floor!

I would totally recommend this, especially if you are a grandparent because it is great entertainment, moves around in one spot and provides a release for energy. :)

I got this toy for my son last year (he likes to ride on things) and since we've had it, we've only used it as a ride on toy. The games/dvd and the connector is probably a little too much for him. He doesn't have the attention span to play the games. When he sees the receiver/connection device, he wants to yank it and pull it out.

As a ride on toy, I love it! He's grown to love it. At first he would sit on it and bounce, get bored after a couple of minutes. Now, he's 20 months, he LOVES to sit, bounce and spin. The little noises the toy makes (galloping sound), makes him giggle. It is VERY sturdy. Putting the thing together was a bit cumbersome and we had to use a rubber mallet to get that last piece in. (The base comes in separate pie pieces that you have to connect together and fit into the slots). Then there are metal prong/legs that slide into the green base to hold the horse in place. It's definitely sturdy. I don't worry about my son tipping backwards (or forwards) in this. He does have short legs and he's able to bounce and climb on and off - so that's a plus for smaller babies.

Why the 3 stars? I think it's pricey for what we use it for. I've played the games with the toy, but either our receiver isn't working or the toy isn't working, because I find it to be slow/buggy response. It's cute but not essential in my kiddo's toy must have.

Customer Review: Surprisingly Bad Toy from Fisher Price
Summary: 2 Stars

There are so many problems with the bouncing mechanism on this toy. It doesn't rock back and forth, it only goes up and down on a post. When compressed, the horse can also spin on the post. However, if the child is leaning even slightly forward or backwards on the horse when bouncing, it gets hung up on the post and makes a horrible squeaking sound. Something is rubbing that shouldn't be. After 5 days, yellow plastic dust shaving were starting to collect on the base under the post, having clearly been rubbed off by the bouncing. How safe is plastic dust for a child to ingest?

They also seemed to gaff on the age range. The horse is difficult to bounce for a 12 month old (doesn't compress easily enough). As well, the video game part on the TV, even at level 1, is way too complex for a 12 month old to grasp. So, you would think the toy is actually for a older/larger child. However, the actual riding horse is so small, a larger (3-4 yr?) toddler likely would not fit on it. So, too difficult for a 1-2 yr old to use and too small for larger toddlers (may be best for a smaller 2-3 yr old).

Good idea, horrible construction, poor execution.

Customer Review: The squeaky horse that doesn't bounce!
Summary: 1 Stars

This is a terrible product. We were excited to be getting our 1 year old daughter a big present for Christmas. I will say we did get a great reaction from her when we got the horse set up. In fact, she squealed with joy, and as if she had done it hundreds of times before, she straddled the horse and began to bounce with joy. And that's where the fun stopped. A screeching squeaking sound emanates from this horse with every bounce. It's like nails on a chalkboard combined with a fork scratching a plate. We hoped that with time the squeaking would subside but it never did. We even tried different forms of lubricant from WD40 to grease and nothing worked. The horse will bounce quietly if the child moves perfectly straight up & down. But if they lean even slightly forward or backward, the horrible sound ensues. I wish I could review the video portion of this, because I was excited to see how our child would react. But for now, this piece of junk rests quietly in the corner of my daughters room, mercifully unused. Maybe she didn't like the squeaking either. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND.

Customer Review: Absolutely brilliant!

We got this on a special deal for about $46 shipped, right before the price increased to $60-something. My 21-month old girl LOVES this thing, it's her "po-eee". My 3-year old son says it's his pony, but my girl is having so much fun with this. She hasn't been off it much since we got it. It was easy to assemble, only 4 screws in the base which otherwise snaps together, and 4 screws for the handlebars. Takes 3AAA in the pony itself (which works by itself as well) and 3C in the TV box. Requires yellow and white connector jacks on the TV, most late model TV's have these, the one we tried first didn't, we tried to hook it up through the VCR and it didn't work. Couldn't get it to work through the DISH box either. But works fine on our other TV's that have the colored connector jacks on the front or side of the TV. I would recommend this for any child able to sit on it and bounce without falling off. 44lb weight limit means it should be good through 4-5 years of age. We have another baby girl, 3 months old, and can't wait for her to be able to play with it, too!
