Toys and Games Reviews of Fisher-Price Laugh & Learn Learning Puppy

Customer Review: Chaotic, Random, Noisy, Confusing
Summary: 2 Stars

Got this puppy for my 24 mo. old, and have been nothing but frustrated with it. It has only one real button to push - an obvious big red plastic heart on the chest. The other "buttons" are ultra-sensitive pads on the hands, feet, ear, and in the tummy that say things like "hand", "foot", etc. Most of them also trigger silly songs, which wouldn't be too bad if it could ever get all the way through a song. But the ultra-sensitive nature of the other buttons means that any bump or movement (keep in mind 2 year old here) triggers a button, often without you realizing what got pushed. When a button gets triggerd it makes the song stop and the puppy exclaim something random like "You're my friend!" "That tickles" "Green Hand". Or you could be giving the puppy a hug, and it will be saying "Foot", "Yellow Foot", or you're carrying it down the hall and it's saying "Let's sing and play games". It's chaotic, random, noisy, confusing. And the best part is, the whole thing won't work at all if it is turned off. The on/off function is one part of the 3-part pad on the left foot. Especially with that big red "push me" plastic heart in the middle of the chest, you think my little guy can figure out that he's supposed to push the bottom portion of the left foot to make this thing turn back on, especially when he usually can't figure out that something accidentaly got pushed that turned it off? He gets bored of it quickly every time he picks it up. Very dissapointing for a supposedly "learning" toy.

Customer Review: Hate this possessed toy
Summary: 1 Stars

Of all of the tons of toys my children have - this toy is always relegated to a corner. Neither of my kids play with it. It was given to my daughter when she was 10 months and is now 2.5 years and she has really never shown interest in it - except at 3 am when it randomly goes off declaring "i love you" in the most annoying voice. At that point, her interest is really closer to the "Mommy what is this horrid thing waking me up in the middle of the night?" than affection for the toy.

I recently reinstalled the batteries and dragged out the possessed puppy for my 9 month old son who does little with it beyond tossing it and crawling away from it in the opposite direction.

As to the toy's durability and functioning: the buttons that activate the puppy are on hair triggers. Sometimes walking across a room is enough to set it off. As mentioned earlier, the puppy also turns itself on in the middle of the night and randomly shouts things out - scary when you wake up at 2 am thinking a prowler is declaring his love for you and asking for a hug. I did call Fisher Price about the puppy possession and was told to turn it off when my child was done playing with it. Gee Thanks.

Bottom line: if you want a toy to teach your child the ABCs, go for Leap Frog's Talking Letter Factory video and fridge phonics. They may not be cuddly, but they work and don't turn themselves on at inopportune times.

Customer Review: Puppy provides hours of entertainment!
Summary: 5 Stars

My daughter got this as a present when she was 2 months old. Obviously she didn't show an interest in it then, but at 4 months she fell in love. Once she could sit up (semi-assisted) at 4 months, she'd sit behind him and chew on his ears. Now she's 8 months and she presses his nose, belly, hands and feet and she laughs and giggles at it. She also wrestles with the puppy.
It has 2 modes -- "sing and play games" and "learning time". For each mode, each body part will say 3 different things, so there is a GREAT variety of sayings, songs and games. In fact, for the first few days that she played with it, my husband and I were like, "We haven't heard that saying before."
For sing and play games time, it plays a variety of songs, including "If You're Happy and You Know It", "Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes", "Do Your Ears Hang Low" and "Itsy Bitsy Spider." It also does "Patty-Cake" and "This Little Puppy Went to Market". Additionally, it says things like, "Got my toes", "I love you", "Sooooo Big", "You're my friend" and "Hug me."
For learning time, it identifies body parts and colors like, "Ear", "Blue ear", and "Yellow foot". It will sing the "ABC's song" too.
My daughter's favorite is when she presses its nose and it sneezes.
So far, it has held up very well. The only thing I don't like is it is surface wash only, and she chews on it alot.

Customer Review: EVEN FUN FOR SILLY ADULTS, LIKE ME!
Summary: 5 Stars

It was time to celebrate my grand-nephews VIP 1st birthday! Ever the serious internet researcher, I set out to find the most highly rated toys for tots. Hey, I am no mindless gift-giving shlump, it's got to be good. I choose a couple of toys, waited too long to order from Amazon, (sorry Amazon, you know I love you) and set out to my local Target. (A bad idea, they NEVER seem to have what I want in stock) I admit, the looks of this puppy didn't appeal to me. By default, I had to go down my list and came home with this. Results: A fun time was had by all! I went shopping with a girlfriend and drove her a little nuts, because I played with it all the way home. (30 min) I then subjected everyone else to show and tell. I finally had to part with the little guy and hand it over to the other little guy. All the adults had a great time watching the birthday boy laugh hysterically and touch the nose. He seemed to know what to do instinctively! Another wonderful thing: he didn't have it already, and no one else gave him one! I did inform "the mom" that she needed to take off the sticker on the back as mentioned previously, or the songs won't finish. (4 stars for durable, the fabric could be better, don't let the dog get it) ... I hear he's still lovin' it, and I've earned another star on my chart!....and me, I miss my little puppy! :(

Customer Review: He's a good dog who sings songs (all the way through)
Summary: 5 Stars

This little pup is a very awesome baby toy!! For $20 (or less--we got ours for free during a 2-1 Fisher Price special), he is very interactive and elaborate.

While he may not always have a light-up bone (as in Amazon's description) he counts, names body parts and colors, has funny sayings, and sings many songs (ENTIRE songs). He's funnier, more educational (and cuter) than "Tickle-Me-Elmo"--minus the annoying voice.

A few of folks have been rating him poorly because his songs cut off early. This is possibly a misunderstanding resulting from the pup not being taken out of "demo" mode. You have to pull a plastic tab out of his back in order for him to fully function (otherwise his songs cut short). Unfortuantely the directions are not clear on the box and the tab doesn't stand out so it is easy to mistake him for a "bad musical toy"... However, once he's out of demo mode the songs aren't just longer but more plentiful too. He (or she) has a nonstop sweet voice.

One more tip - The "off" switch on this pup's foot does not always work and he easily can be turned back on by being touched (a naptime annoyance). He has a better shut-off switch (and volume control) on his back velcroed under his "skin."

All-in-all, this little pup is quite loveable. :)
