Toys and Games Reviews of Fisher-Price Laugh & Learn Learning Puppy

Customer Review: Reluctantly positive review
Summary: 4 Stars

I'm afraid I was raised to be a bit of a snob about toys that just sit there and yell at a child rather than encouraging imaginative play. And our 1-year-old son has quite a few traditional stuffed toys that he likes a great deal. So when my nephew received this toy for his 1st b-day & I was told that my son also would for his (2 months later), I was convinced that he would hate it as much as I planned to, and said, "Oh no he won't!"

But the gift was already bought by a great-aunt far away, so in it came. We had noticed that our nephew carried his everywhere & apparently loved it as much as our son loved his stuffies, but I was still skeptical. And OH, the grating voices that come out of that puppy . . .

That said, my husband pointed out, "This wasn't a present for US, it's for THE BABY." And the baby . . . loves it.

He barely speaks, but can kind of say "Puppy" to ask for it. He doesn't walk yet, but he hauls the puppy around in his walker, holding it high in the air by its (non-electronic) ear. He props himself against the couch in a standing position, lays the puppy down in front of himself, and slaps away at its contacts, frowning in concentration as it hollers about the great big colorful world or whines "It's learning tiiiiiime." He has limited strength, and this is one of the few electronic toys he can actually get to respond properly. He adores the songs, and demands hand motions with "Eensy Beensy Spider" or the classic "Head & Shoulders, Knees & Toes." He uses the ears as handles to hold Puppy in front of his face for an unconventional game of Peekaboo. He loves to kiss it when happy, or bite it when he's angry over being told "No." If Puppy is turned off, he flips him over and bangs the back of his shirt, pleading with me to do whatever magic thing I do back there to bring Puppy back to life. (At times like these, I bless Fisher-Price for the low-volume setting.)

Sigh. Learning Puppy, horrible voice and all, is our son's new confidante and best friend. So even though the thing scares the bejeebus out of me by shrieking "PEEKABOO! I SEE YOU!" when I walk by it too briskly in the night (no touching necessary! yay!), I will reluctantly agree that sometimes my child is going to like things I hate.

He'd just better not grow up to vote conservative.

Customer Review: Fantastic Puppy! We ALL Wish It Would Come To Life. A Durable, Fun and Educational Toy!
Summary: 4 Stars

What a great little toy! Your new cuddly friend can actually work as an early educational tool. This little Puppy really became a great hit. Not only is he cute, he also plays several different songs and helps your young child to learn ABC's and 123's! Not only is he cute, but he also has a great collar that will light up in concert with the music being played.

I consider this toy to be a "Great Bang For Your Buck" and that's coming from someone who has to be frugal about almost every purchase. However, buying a toy like the Laugh & Learn Learning Puppy is a super value and is actuallty worth more than the sale price. How often is it that you hear about a toy that is priced well and has several great and unique attributes?

You can really make early education fun by taking advantage of everything the toy was made to do. How about singing "...The Itsy Bisty Spider..." with your child? There are plenty of other great songs and tools to teach the 123's, etc.

I hope this was helpful to you. There is likely much more information elesewhere, but I wanted to give you an honest opinion from someone who has to stay on a budget and can only buy toys that are durable, educational and Fun For All!

Have fun!

Customer Review: Makes my daughter cry
Summary: 1 Stars

This is a horrible toy. My two year old daughter got it as a birthday gift from her godfather, who bought it because of the fantastic reviews. It arrived broken -- one of the paw pad sensors doesn't work unless you squeeze it just right, with two fingers. In the past Fisher Price has given me fantastic service, so I'm sure they'll take care of that problem when I get around to calling.

The really terrible thing about this puppy is that when you hit a sensor, the toy stops whatever it was doing and starts a new thing. The sensors are super sensitive, and will go off if you just brush up against the toy. My daughter wants to hear the songs all the way through, and sing along, but of course she wants to be able to hold or touch the puppy at the same time. So the song stops, then it takes like five tries to cycle around to the song she wants, then she hugs the puppy and the song stops again. After about ten minutes of this she was in tears. I've never see my little girl so distraught -- she's not a kid who gets discouraged or cries much, but she just collapsed into my arms in tears of frustration. I felt awful for her.

Other things I don't like about it:
1. The "this little piggy" chant is turned into "this little puppy," so now my daughter has started saying that, and I prefer the classic rhyme.
2. There's a whole part that says "blue ear," "yellow foot," "green hand," when you hit those body parts. But because it cuts off when you hit the sensors, it can sound like "blue -- foot," when the foot is actually yellow. My daughter repeated "blue foot," and I had to correct her.
3. It says "I love you". I generally don't like inanimate objects saying they love my child.

If Fisher Price just made the slight change of having this puppy complete what he's doing before starting the next activity, we'd probably love it!

Customer Review: A great alternative to Baby Tad!
Summary: 4 Stars

My dad got this for my 1-year-old last Christmas. I wasn't too excited in seeing it, being that we had Baby Tad and I wasn't thrilled with him at all (see review).

However, this toy actually has some educational value. I wouldn't rate it excellent, but it can teach your baby a thing or two if they aren't the type to press buttons over and over (as a reviewer said, the slightest touch can change what the puppy is saying or what song he is singing, and that gets confusing). If they are like my son, they'll press a button and intently watch and wait until Puppy stops talking/singing before pressing anything else.

There are two modes to this toy. Learning and Song mode. Your baby will learn parts of the body and also learn some colors. Song mode teaches songs such as Itsy Bitsy Spider--my son always hates that one, especially when I sing it myself--and Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes.

This toy is much less annoying than Baby Tad, in my opinion. It isn't so repetitive and the buttons are actually easy for babies to press. With Baby Tad, I found that I even had problems sometimes getting certain button-shapes to work. With this, baby can lightly press and it will activate.

I do have one problem with this toy, though. The way it looks. I feel it's a little silly to actually print the words on the body parts. It isn't as if the baby can actually read, and most older kids that might be able to make the connection wouldn't want to play with this.

Overall, this is a reasonable learning toy that is fun for baby. I don't feel that most "learning" toys really deliver, but this does an okay job.

Customer Review: She likes it so she'll get a new one buuuuttttt...
Summary: 4 Stars

My 6 month old daughter got this for Christmas and loves it. She especially loves when we sing along to the songs (which BTW are not THAT annoying... I think it depends on your personal preference). Head/Shoulders/Knees/Toes and the ABC song have both come in handy to sing to her when she's upset. I never found the paws to have a hair trigger sensitivity issue. In fact, just the opposite. I have to push on it to get it to play sounds and have been wondering how in the world she'd ever be able to activate it herself. I got it because my cousin's 9 month old LOVED hers.

The bad part is that the power switch foot is busted. It won't change modes anymore. And naturally it happened in the mode that's the learning stage - a bit too soon for her age - which means I can't get to the songs she really likes to hear. I dont know if this is from rough play by our 10 and 12 y/o nephews who play with her or being carted back and forth to places.

I originally bought this at Target for Christmas where it might have been "tried" one too many times. I'm hoping that is the reason why it is already broken. Either way, I have to replace it. She loves it way too much.

PS - she also has a v-tech Violet that currently does not hold any interest to her. I think it's a bit too advanced at the moment and will come in handy when she learns to talk, count, etc.

UPDATED 4/3/11: I now see what other parents were talking about when they said this toy has a hair trigger. The one foot activates if you even brush the toy at all it seems. She still loves the toy but I agree with other comments that the ADD it has can be annoying.
