Toys and Games Reviews of Fisher-Price Kid Tough Portable DVD Player BlueCustomer Review: We love it when it works... Summary: 4 Stars
My 8 year old son got this for Christmas and it was fabulous. He has autism and loves to press buttons, this player allowed him to control his viewing and he was so content the whole time (a real gift for us parents). We loved it so much I bought a second one so that we could have "back up". Within three weeks of Christmas player #1 was broken, totally black nothing would play. I exchanged it at Walmart, then about 3 weeks later player #2 broke, the fisher price logo would show but it wouldn't play. I again exchanged it again. Then about 2 weeks after that player #3 stopped working. I called the company and low and behold they have a 1 year warranty and they were so sorry for my trouble. They are sending me a mailing label and will "make it right" for as long as it takes. So the moral is they are not nearly as tough as they should be BUT if they break call the company, the 1-800 number is on the package. They will make it right. We love this player when it works but man is it disappointing when it doesn't.
Customer Review: This thing can take a beating Summary: 5 Stars
We got this for our three year-old son, and since we have had it, it has dropped from the kitchen table numerous times, dropped in the car, the sidewalk, the bedroom, bathroom, and anywhere else. It keeps going. Yes, it is pricey. But consider that the price confers to the buyer a player that a three year old can actually hold and use. Other DVD players are much too fragile to hand over to a child. This one is durable and easy to use. The buttons are easy, menus are usually bypassed, and the option to use an AC adapter, car charger, or the built in rechargeable is a blessing. I absolutely recommend the travel kit. My only change would be to ask for a green LED light that changes to red when needing charging. Otherwise this is a DVD player that your child can take anywhere. The stand makes it nice to prop up, and with the travel kit, it can connect to a TV as well. There may be cheaper ones out there, but this is one that you can hand over and not worry about. And that's worth the price alone.
Customer Review: Great handheld dvd player for kids Summary: 4 Stars
My 19 month old son loves this dvd player. It's nice to take it with us to the dr's office, grocery store, or any place we like to keep him entertained. It really does seem to hold up well. As you can imagine my 19 month old is pretty rough on his toys. He has dropped it a few times and it hasn't seemed to do any damage. He hasn't dropped it down the stairs like the commercial shows, but it is made well enough that I think it probably could be dropped down the stairs. It only has about a 2 hour charge, but I think you could buy a car charger if needed. I haven't done that yet, but I plan to do that so we can take it with us on long car trips. I wish the dvd player wasn't so easy to open. My son figured that out right away and it has been a challenge to keep him from taking the dvd in and out. All in all we really like this though. I would also recommend buying the carrying case to carry it in. It has places to put other dvd's and comes in handy when you are traveling.
Customer Review: Worthless Player!!!!!! Summary: 1 Stars
The very first time we dropped this player (3 - 4 ft) it exploded into pieces and the disc fell out! The batterylife blows, the volumn button doesn't work anymore, we've had the player since February and it's August. No child lock button to keep the kids from pressing buttons and complaining about their movie being messed up. The eject button is way too easy for little hands to open. The cheap legs on the back can be pulled off my a 10 month old, as was the case of my second child, and now they are lost. Any fall, great or small, the door flys open and the disc falls out. Don't bring to public place because it can't get loud enough to hear. The screen is about the size of my mobile phone. It no longer plays all our discs. This is only naming a few problems my husband and I could think of off the top of our heads. Asked/begged for this item for our daughter's third birthday and we are so embarassed when we have to tell her grandparents that it is a piece of crap!
Customer Review: Kid Tough or "Tough, Kid" ... Summary: 2 Stars
We purchased two of these Christmas 2008. One pink, one blue. As of this review, our pink one is still working but the blue one is shot. I called Fisher Price customer service but because it's been over the one year warranty (info that offered voluntarily) nothing could be done. The blue one does not charge ... period. Working, working, stopped working. Keeping track of the tool to open the back is a pain and I've swapped out adapters (with the pink one) to make sure it's not the adapter. I'm throwing out a toy and don't even know why. Customer service says this isn't an issue they've seen before and because of that, there isn't anything they can do.
I'm so disappointed we spent this kind of money. As of today, the blue one is a $220.00 toy! Save your money and get the kids a cheapie portable DVD player. You could replace it 7-8 times for the cost of this one. It may be kid tough, but it should be "Tough, Kid."
