Toys and Games Reviews of Fisher-Price Kid Tough Portable DVD Player BlueCustomer Review: Mixed Emotions!!! Summary: 2 Stars
I have 7 year old autistic twin boys. We bought each one a Kid Tough DVD player, mainly for trips. They loved the Videonows, so we knew we couldn'tpass these up when we saw them. The DVD players were put on charge Christmas Eve, so they would be ready to go Christmas morning (we knew neither boy would understand why they couldn't watch it immediately). They found these first thing Christmas morning. For saftey reasons I'm going to call my boys child 1 and child 2. Child 1 found his and just loved it, he started watching right away. Child 2 saw his brothers and couldn't wait to get his. So, we put a DVD in, and it wouldn't load. We tried several more DVD's, and made sure they worked on child 1's player, and they did. I felt so bad for child 2, he was trying to watch over his brothers shoulder. There isn't much worse than getting something for Christmas that doesn't work. I'm going to contact Fisher Price and see what they say. Now, not all negative, the first player is still working great, and other than the fighting over it (which is why we purchased 2), we have no issues with it. No problems with plalying DVD's, it has been dropped, and remains very durable. It stays charged for about 2 hours, and that's with my son doing a constant rewind and fast forward. So, I guess it's a gamble. I would probably still purchase again, because the delight on my boys' face, and how thrilled they are with the one that does work. I do wish they would have used regular AA batteries, so when they batteries went dead I could have just slapped in another set of rechargeables.
*UPDATE*
I called Fisher Price, and at first the lady told me that they usually require the customer to pay return shipping. WHAT?? We hadn't even used it one single time, came out of the box with just the Fisher Price logo lighting up. Well, they waived shipping, and requested that I purchase insurance. The post office wouldn't sell me insurance, they said returns are normally non working items, and they asked me if it worked. Well, I'm not lieing, so I said no. They said they do not insure an item that doesn't work. Fisher Price still has it, but it hasn't been that long. On a side note, I found 2 more at Target on clearance for [...]. Of course since we got a "deal" at Christmas for [...] each, I couldn't pass them up for [...]. No problems out of these two. So, 3 out of 4, with 3 having no issues yet. I can't complain to much. Fisher Price is making it right.
Customer Review: Hanging Tough For Toddlers Summary: 4 Stars
Fisher Price has done it again and they have released another great kid-tough product. This year they have released a DVD player that will be able to handle a royal beating from your toddler. As a personal fan of their kid-tough camera, I was excited to see how the new DVD Player worked.
This DVD player is built from sturdy heavy-duty materials that can handle plenty of abuse. Each unit comes with a rechargeable battery & charger, which holds a charge for about two hours.
The screen size is 3.2' and has a color LCD screen on it with simple controls that make it easy for children to use. It also has a handle where kids can tote or hold the unit while they watch their movies or you can use the kickstand legs on the unit for hands-free viewing.
Not included with this player is a video out cable for the television, but if purchased, your child can watch their movies through their own DVD player on the regular television.
The main issue with it, as a parent of a destructive toddler, is that your child can take their own movies in and out and a parent safety latch would be great for keeping the movie in there, but still allowing your child the "controls" of stopping and starting their own shows. Because of this reason, it makes it a toy that requires more parental supervision to insure that we don't ruin our precious Dora movies that would be played on it.
The screen size is small, but understandably so in order to make this portable for little hands. This toy has a steeper price tag, but would work great for a family that doesn't want to make an investment in a DVD unit for the car, but wants to be able to take their child's entertainment on the road.
Of course, my parents used to have us entertain ourselves and we laughingly referred to our car as the "blue prison" on our treks to visit the family in Florida. Perhaps something like this would have saved my parents from yelling at us so much.
Customer Review: Works pretty well, kids love it, life saver on long trips Summary: 4 Stars
We have two, a pink one for a girl and a blue one for a boy. Are they perfect? No, but they are pretty good for what they are - kids players. We are very happy with them overall and the kids each love theirs.
With just a little supervision, they can be used by very small children. Ours started as young as 2. They are fairly tough. They can take some banging around. Ours have never broken or badly malfunctioned, but then they haven't had that much rough treatment. We are trying to teach the kids to respect things that need careful handling. So far, so good.
The kids absolutely love them. They can put them on their laps and it's theirs. Many times they prefer them to the big screen TV. I think it makes them feel more in control.
The screen is small, but kids have no problems at all. I have even seen 2-3 kids watching the same screen.
They sometimes skip a bit and I think one froze once, but overall they work and there have been no major failures.
They do take quite awhile to come up at first and I have never figured out exactly what all the buttons do. Many buttons cause it to start over from the beginning of the DVD. Trying to get them to pause and then start right back up has been a problem, but then maybe I just don't know how to work them right.
One charge lasts about an hour or maybe a little more. We like that. When they run out of juice, we can get the kids to do something else, like go to bed. ;-)
They sure make long plane trips and waiting in the boarding area much easier.
Customer Review: Not Durable! Summary: 1 Stars
We bought three of these for each of our children last christmas (one pink and two blues). At first I thought they were great. We don't have a DVD player in our van, so it was perfect for long rides to Grandma's house.
Within a couple of months, little glitches started to happen - not being able to read DVDs the first time they were put in, lines across the screen, buttons not working, etc. The one we bought for our two-year old got the most abuse, but his was the one with the least amount of issues.
Now, 9 months later, I hate getting these things out. One of the blue ones doesn't work AT ALL!! The play button on the pink one doesn't work until you push it 20-30 times (literally). The other blue one always gets lines across the screen. And one of the chargers don't work anymore either (which works out since one of the DVD players crapped out as well).
I have three of them, so I can confidently say: SAVE YOUR MONEY - DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT!!!! It is too expensive and wasteful for how short of a time it works. You'd be better off purchasing an ipod nano and buying movies for it on itunes.
Customer Review: Love, love, love this DVD Player!! Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this product at Walmart as a gift for my 7 year old son who has special needs. He loves DVD's but he also loves pushing the buttons and making things happen. I introduced this to him last week before making an 8 hour road trip for the holiday weekend. It was perfect! The buttons are big and he learned what they do very quickly. He's dropped it and tossed it a few times already. The worse thing that has happened is that the DVD came dislodged. The thing looks like we've had it for a long time already because he is very rough with toys, but it has held up wonderfully! I'm thrilled and highly recommend it to anyone who's child likes to be in control of his dvd player.
Two quick things that I don't like for my situation, I wish the door could lock so he couldn't get it open. I am using a small piece of tape to keep him from getting it opened and from scratching the dvds. And it takes a little longer for the dvd to start playing. Children (and parents) will have to learn a little patience. Otherwise, AWESOME!
