Toys and Games Reviews of Fisher-Price Kid-Tough Headphones BlueCustomer Review: They're way too quiet Summary: 3 Stars
We got these for our 2 year old who loves listening to music on his Sweet Pea MP3. They have a volume control feature that keeps the volume way too low. I understand the need to keep it from blowing out his ears, but the level is ridiculous. It couldn't be heard well on a plane or in a loud room. I have the headphone volume on his MP3 player set to the highest setting, which makes it reasonably audible in a quiet setting.
I also don't need the volume control since it's already a feature on most kid toys, including the Sweet Pea.
I'd give it a lower rating, but since I don't have many choices when it comes to kid friendly head phones, I'll take what I can get. :) I was also lucky enough to find them on clearance for five dollars at Target, so I can't gripe too much.
As for toughness, he tore off one of the thin felt ear coverings the first time he used them. I understand he's only two and these were made for older kids so I won't be too hard on Fisher Price. But adult head phones are built sturdier and we're not messing with them like kids are. I would have expected something stronger. Fortunately he only tore it a little bit. Nothing a screwdriver and some gorilla glue couldn't fix.
As for pros, they do the job. Just don't have your music on too loud in the car. And they're cute and seem comfortable.
Customer Review: Great headphones...unless you actually want to HEAR something! Summary: 1 Stars
My 5 year old got these for Christmas and was going to use them in the car while playing his Leapster. He kept complaining that they didn't work. I thought he was doing something wrong, but he wasn't. The volume is so quiet that I couldn't hear a single word, no matter how hard I tried to listen. We returned them to the store and I bought him a pair of Kidz Gear headphones on Amazon. Problem solved! For the same price, he gets a much more comfortable pair that he can listen to anywhere. They don't have the strict volume control of the Fisher Price or Sony - the pair I bought for my two year old and had the same issue as the FP ones...they went back to the store as well - but at least they can use them them in a quiet room or a loud car where people are talking around them. Both my boys know that I will do volume checks to be sure they don't have it too loud, and my oldest is sensitive to loud noise, so he never cranks it up anyway. If they plan on just using them in their bedrooms quietly, then I guess the FP ones are mediocre but usable. If you can hear sound out of them, it is scratchy and sounds horrible. Kids might not be as picky, but my son had a hard time understanding what his Leapster was saying. Waste of money....Buy Kidz Gear instead!
Customer Review: Great idea but did not perform Summary: 1 Stars
These are super tough, well-built headphones. If the sound quality was good and they worked with all sources, they would be perfect for my child. They are recommended for 3 and up but they fit my 18 month old as well. The sad part is they emitted almost no sound when plugged into either of my CD players. They worked better with my I-Pod though. The sound quality is almost poor, however. I'm not sure if I was dealing with a defective product here, but the 'sound reduction' feature seemed to make the sound grainy like a poorly tuned radio station. The headphones I received would not work well in the car where there is a lot of noise. The cord is a good length for use by a child but it would make plugging into the car's system difficult without an extension. If I was dealing with a defective set, you may have better luck. This product has a great idea behind it, maybe the redesign could be tweaked a little to improve performance.
Customer Review: Cord should be longer Summary: 2 Stars
I have another pair of Fisher Price Kids Tough Headphones that I use in my SUV for my son to watch movies through the in car DVD player. I thought that these would be the same only a different color, but they are not. The cord is at least 2 ft shorter. It is stretched taut when he sits by the door to reach the ceiling jack in the middle. Additionally, the noise controlling feature makes it too soft, because he cannot hear it if it happens to be raining outside. Spend your money on the pair that is included in the package for their portable DVD player. It's a much better product.
Customer Review: Size is the only thing going for it Summary: 2 Stars
I bought 2 of these, one for my 4yr old and the other for my 6yr old. They fit great but that's where the greatness ends. The volume is way too low. The primary use for these was to use them in the car when traveling for their own DVD's so we can listen to our music and they can hear their own DVD's. Our kids kept telling us our music was too loud and they couldn't hear. I listened and I really had to strain to hear the sound. There needs to be an adjustable part under the plastic box for adults to adjust. It's a good concept but it really missed the mark for us.
