Toys and Games Reviews of Fisher Price Kid-Tough Digital Camera for BoysCustomer Review: Good for kids Summary: 4 Stars
We have bought this for our 6 year old and intend on giving it to her for a Christmas gift. We took it out of the box and played with it. It seems to be durable. We were concerned about photo quality after reading a couple of the reviews but took some photos and had them printed ourselves. I work in the photo graphics industry and professional quality photos they are not; however, this is a kid's toy and you have to keep that in mind. If you want professional photos buy a REAL high-end camera for your child to use. The images are just fine for a 4x6 photo. The best part is that we won't be buying film and paying for processing for photos that have chopped off heads, ground shots, animal behinds, etc. We can print just the good ones. I'm sure she is going to love this. If the pictures aren't being taken outdoors make sure the room you are in is well-lit. However, if they are a little dark, most photo processing places have equipment and computers have software to lighten them up and correct the problem. No big deal. I'm sure my daughter will absolutely love it. In my opinion, it is well worth the investment. The only suggestion I would have for Fisher-Price is to increase the resolution a tad to maybe 800x600 and maybe have a couple of flash options.
Customer Review: Fisher Price Kid Tough Digital Camera USB connectivity Summary: 3 Stars
The easiest thing turned out to be the most troublesome. I plugged the camera into the USB of a Dell Inspiron 700m, Inspiron 710m, and finally a Dell Dimension 2100 which finally recognized the camera as an external storage device (after letting it 'cook' for five minutes and then restarting Windows XP explorer.exe). All three machines I have are WinXP SP2, AOL MacAfee security. I then opened the camera to remove the batteries till Christmas. That's when I installed a 16MB SD card and the little battery that holds the information on the chip while the AA batteries are out. Oops. The camera forgot about its settings and I had to go thru the "install process" again. That time I learned that if there are no pictures on the internal chip, the 2100 would not recognize the camera. The Fisher-Price web site offers no technical information in the context of connectivity except to say it is USB 1.1 compatible. There are no hardware drivers to load into the WinXP machines. The instruction book with the camera provides no connectivity troubleshooting guidance.
The camera is durable. It makes pictures as described elsewhere on this page. Putting the small battery in seems to be a must for the camera to remember how to connect itself to the PC.
Customer Review: My son loves it! Summary: 4 Stars
My son received this camera today for his 4th birthday. He has been telling me for weeks that he wanted his own camera. A few times I caught him trying to use my digital camera so I knew I needed to do something before he got too cozy with mine.
This camera is sturdy, durbale and very easy to use. My son didn't need any help knowing what each button did. Even his 2 year old sister got a turn taking photos of the Christmas tree, the family dog, and the floor.
I just finished downloading some pictures to the computer and was surprised as to the quality. After reading the reviews I expected much less. Viewing pictures on the LCD screen is dark but the dark pictures appear much lighter on the computer screen.
Overall I think this is a perfect gift for a 4 or 5 year old. Easy to use and durable. I know my son is already asking when we can go places to take some outdoor pictures.
Next on my list is going to be an SD card to expand the memory from 60 pictures to at least 1000. Only took my son 15 minutes to fill up the internal memory the first time. Lucky for us, deleting pictures is also a breeze. Hit the red button two times in a row. Even my son can do it.
Customer Review: Best Kids Camera Around Summary: 5 Stars
My [..] year old got this camera for his birthday and has used it non stop since. He loves the screen on the back and is content to see the pictures there rather than uploading them or printing them (bonus since most of his pictures consist of his toys or other household objects). If he ever does take print worthy pictures, 4x6 pics will suffice since my husband and I use our camera for important occasions. This camera keeps him for asking to use ours, and he loves that he has control of it. We had a Little Tikes camera that was a fraction of the price, but the film and developing charges alone would have paid for this camera long ago. I feel, in that sense, this camera was a bargain. He quickly learned how to delete, and the sound effects help him to know when the camera is off (helpful for battery life), when he has taken a picture or deleted one. It is very durable, in the first 24 hours he owned it it took a fall down the stairs and was dropped by cousins several times on a hardwood floor. It will hold 60 pics, but because he deletes them as he takes them it's not a problem. We may buy a cheap SD card for it in the future. Love it in every way!
Customer Review: a different perspective... just a thought Summary: 3 Stars
I bought this camera (the pink version) used for my daughter who is 5. Although she can handle my digital camera, I wanted something for her that she could be rough with, could handle an accidental spill, and would take a memory card. I read lots of terrible reviews on this camera and I can say that if you are wanting sharp, clear pictures, then this is not your camera. However, if you like the look of old-school photography, then you'll love the way the photos look. Personally, I love the way that her shots come out. She takes rather abstract shots anyway, and the slight graininess and color make them really interesting. I'm not relying on her photos to document our events and lives anyway... they're just an extra perspective and she has a blast with this thing.
One thing that I will say is a big downer is the way the batteries and memory card are stored. You have to remove two screws to do both which means we'll have remember to carry a little screwdriver with us on vacation. I don't think I would have paid the full retail price for this since it's just not that much less expensive than a cheap adult camera, but used it's well worth it.
