Toys and Games Reviews of Fisher-Price Kid - Tough Digital Camera Blue [Amazon Frustration - Free Packaging]Customer Review: Because one virus isn't enough... Summary: 1 Stars
This toy provides pretty good entertainment for my two and five year old daughters--they love clicking the button and seeing the picture they just took in the small view-finder. After a number of drops, it still functions fine.
However, when it comes time to download your budding photographer's images on a Windows machine, you will be rewarded with not one, but two computer viruses.
What is particularly disturbing about this is not that Fischer Price could be so incredibly incompetent as to allow this to get past their QA (do they not have virus scanners on their own machines?), but their official response to the problem, posted here: [...]. Rather than take any responsibility for their colossal blunder, Fisher Price informs its customers that if they don't have an up-to-date virus scanner, it is their problem.
Now, I fully agree folks should have a current virus scanner (and I spend a lot of time bailing out acquaintances who don't), but for an organization to show absolutely no remorse over such a phenomenally staggering blunder is beyond belief.
I also question Amazon continuing to sell a product that they now must now is dangerous to their customers--as a responsible retailer, they should have pulled this product from their shelves until Fisher Price provided both a responsible apology and recall plan along with a suitable guarantee that all future shipments would be virus-free.
Customer Review: Beware - Viruses Summary: 3 Stars
My mom purchased this for my son for Christmas. Amazon and FP did a wonderful job with the environmentally conscious packaging (plain brown box and no packing material, but the camera was shrink wrapped and very secure).
Yes the camera is well built and the quality of the pictures is appropriate for the price point; what do you really expect for under $50? Yes, it goes through batteries quickly, again what do you expect from a toy. You should always have a stash of rechargeable batteries if you have kids.
My biggest complaint (and that of many others; google "fisher price camera, virus"), is the camera came preloaded with 2 viruses. Before you let your little one use this camera, buy new or update your anti-virus software and format the memory in the camera, then scan the camera with your anti-virus software to make sure. I loaded up my son's camera and ZoneAlarm stopped Trojan.Win32.Agent from loading. I scanned the pictures and they seem fine. I scanned the memory in the camera and it came back not only with Trojan.Win32.Agent, but also Backdoor.Win32. I reformatted the memory in the camera and scanned again and it looks clean, then scanned my computer and it was clean. I don't believe that the presences of the viruses was malicious, but FP MUST have more quality control over their products and ensure that the computers in the manufacturing facility are clean of malware and up to date.
Customer Review: It's a toy, not a camera Summary: 4 Stars
The important thing to realize about this product is that it's much more of a toy than it is a camera. It's built with plenty of rubber around the body to cushion the blow of repeated falls and also makes it easier to grip. The functions available are only the most basic possible. The lens has no zoom capability, there are virtually no settings to change, it's a true point and shoot. For children who want to carry a camera around and feel like they're taking pictures it's great.
Unfortunately, if your child is old enough to make even a passing effort at improving his photos, then this camera will not serve. The LCD is low resolution and fades badly in direct sunlight. The viewfinder is both badly distorted and shows only a small portion of the area that will be photographed. And the photos themselves are so grainy, poorly focused, and poorly exposed that it won't matter what your child does. Every picture will look awful because the camera simply isn't capable of doing better.
In summary, this is a perfectly good gift for children that would enjoy playing with a camera. The price is reasonable and it's built to take a decent amount of punishment. As long as you are okay with photos that aren't worth looking at, let alone printing, you'll be happy with the purchase.
Customer Review: BEWARE of Malware infection! Summary: 1 Stars
The camera itself is nothing short of awesome for our 3 year old. It takes acceptable pictures for his use, it seems indestructible and he absolutely loves it. The one thing that I just can't overlook, though, is that ours was infected with Malware (win32.rajump) and it attempted to infect our PC when we connected the USB cable. Win32.rajump is a worm that spreads through removable drives (this camera operates as a removable drive when connected to your PC) and opens a backdoor on your PC. This is totally unacceptable and down-right malicious in my mind. Thank goodness for Norton. I am wondering if this is a problem with the factory sealed models, also? It may just be a result of opting for the 'Frustration Free Packaging' option. Since it is taken from the factory packaging prior to shipping to you, there are then opportunities for someone to load malicious software. I just don't know where it was loaded (factory or after taken from factory packaging), but what I do know is that having a Malware Trojan loaded on this is TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE. The 1 star rating is due to the loaded Malware, not the camera itself (which is 5 star). Everyone that has connected this camera to their PC should perform a thorough scan to check for infection.
Customer Review: Major quirks but fun and durable Summary: 2 Stars
Pros:
1. Relatively inexpensive, especially at the price I paid, but not worth $60.
2. Built tough for kids.
3. Fun for the kids.
4. Easy to use interface with only 4 control buttons plus a shutter button.
5. Waterproof, but I haven't tested this.
Cons:
1. Terrible battery life.
2. Terrible picture quality, even in bright light.
3. Had to return the first one - kept shutting off even with fresh batteries.
4. Not suppose to use rechargeable batteries.
5. Very slow flash recharge time.
6. Flash doesn't go very far (distance wise). Many times the picture is too dark (subject too far) or washed out (subject too close).
7. Small and low quality LCD display for previewing photos - makes it hard to see.
Other:
1. Includes about 64MB of storage which can hold over 500 photos since they're only about 90 to 130K each.
2. Resolution is 640x480.
3. Some reports and news stories of viruses on these, but mine didn't have one.
4. The shutter button can be difficult for kids to press at first, but my 2 year old eventually got it.
