Toys and Games Reviews of Fisher-Price I Can Play Piano System

Customer Review: Plagued with electrical problems
Summary: 5 Stars

YES There are definitely electrical problems!!! I ordered one for Christmas for my kids and it just "quit" working on 1/22/07. They had been using it religiously. I threw out the box and everything so can't return to Amazon. Fisher Price was not overly helpful. Call the 800 line at FP Customer Relations at 800-432-5437 and demand a replacement. They won't admit there is a problem. They told me to put batteries in it to see if it works that way. I said absolutely not, I want a new one. I am not going to go buy batteries when the thing won't even turn on. They will ship you a new one if you send the old one back (still costs you the shipping charge). It is such a shame. My kids loved it. I hope the new ones have this issue resolved! It's not a cheap toy but it sure is made like one....

Customer Review: piano basics made fun!
Summary: 5 Stars

This product is amazing. My 5 and 8 year olds can now read music and play the piano better than I could after years of lessons. The product teaches the kids to read and play music in an intuitive fashion so that there is no learning stress that so many of us remember from the dreaded piano teacher. We find the kids can now SITE READ music at about a level 2 when they are presented with standard music books on our family's main piano, and that is without any lessons yet! Adults who lament that they quit piano lessons are a dime a dozen, and I think lack of an enjoyable instruction medium (until now!) was the culprit for most of us. Tremendous advance with this product, and I bet over the years it will change basic music instruction techniques for children. I certainly hope so!

Customer Review: Great, until it breaks
Summary: 2 Stars

I read the reviews before purchasing this piano. I got it on clearance after Christmas and was skeptical because I had read about so many that quit working.

My kids loved it, and we treated it as a lesson piano. As they cleared a lesson, they could open another, and they earned new cartridges by clearing others. I would have given it a great review, but decided to wait to see how long it lasted.

I'm glad I did.

I was the only one allowed to set up and take down the piano to minimize wear and tear. Still. Only 4 months after opening it, we started to have problems with the power cord. At 5 months, the power cord is useless.

Was it worth the discount? Borderline. I won't replace it. But we loved it while it lasted.

Customer Review: learn to Play piano
Summary: 4 Stars

I purchased this to help my Downe's Syndrome brother be able to make music on his own. I can't imagine preschool children using this successfully on their own, but with parental interaction it could be a great tool. The VERY slow speed was Ken's level, and he enjoyed it once he understood to wait for the symbol to reach the staff. This became a doable video game for him, which wasn't what I had in mind, but was fun, no less. The tunes are somewhat lost when you play them that slowly. Also, because of the interaction needed, I didn't feel I could send it with him to the group home where he lives--I'll wait for him to come here to play it with him. I have to say that I enjoyed it a lot--especially trying to perfect my scores on accuracy when playing one of the songs!

Customer Review: Son loves it, but defective
Summary: 3 Stars

We bought this for my 5 year old son's Birthday. It seemed to have problems from the time we hooked it up. Fisher Price told me that the power button is designed to be held down for a few seconds to turn on and off so that kids can't just accidentally turn it off, however, ours would come on and never turn back off without unplugging it. After about a week of use, it stopped working altogether. We are now sending it back to FP for a replacement only because my son really does like it.

I also agree with a previous review that it really does not teach a child how to play the piano. My son learned that he could just hit a bunch of keys at the same time and as long as the correct one was hit, he would get a higher score.
