Toys and Games Reviews of Fisher-Price I Can Play Piano System

Customer Review: Pretty Fun but Take Time
Summary: 4 Stars

Although it seems a lot of people were hoping this toy would suddenly teach their child how to play like Bach, we certainly didn't have any expectation when we bought this for my sister for Christmas. I have to admit, she didn't want it, (she wants to play the flute) and doesn't have the patience to practice much. I though have had a great time using it and I'm 22 years old. It comes with one cartridge with your typical basic piano songs like, "heart and soul", "old Mac Donald", "Clementine" and others. There are different levels of how you want the screen to run. It starts with it playing the right music whether you hit the right key, to only playing the music when you hit the right key all the way to without the color coded screen. You can also learn what the right hand does separately from the left and then both together. You can slow it way down for those who tend to punch with one finger (like my sister) and faster once you learn the song. I enjoyed playing this and once she saw me happy that I had completed a song without making a mistake she was fighting for her turn and completed her own "take me out to the ball game." in one night.
So it takes some devotion, if you really want to learn anything and maybe some encouraging, without "helping" but maybe taking turns like we did. Because it wasn't me over her shoulder telling her to watch or play attention or sit up straight, it was me sitting next to her hooting and hollering when I played a song all the way though. She did get sick of the cartridge and we bought the nickelodeon, dora and scooby-doo ones later. She likes those better because it's songs and characters she loves.
I didn't give it 5 stars because she still doesn't play it all that much and I think this is a toy better suited for a child older than 6 like 8. I think it was a waste of my parents money because she didn't ask for it, and isn't interested in it but, like parents do, they tried to get her interested in it since we have a piano and mom played. They could have spent the money and got her flute lessons. So I suggest that you make sure your kids loves the piano, not just music in general before you spend the money for this, because they will ask for the extra cartridges and it will end up under the bed collecting dust like my sisters'.

Description of Fisher-Price I Can Play Piano System

This black 30 keys Piano is ideal for toddlers and children! It features 30 playable keys and has a "baby grand" Piano style. It is made of hardwood and hardboard materials. The Piano measures: 19 1/4"H x 19 7/8"W x 21 1/2" and the matching bench measures 9 1/4"H x 9 5/8"W x 6 1/2".This Piano is perfect for small children to play on and makes a wonderful gift for the special child. It is also a great value for the money!
Better than dull, expensive piano lessons, the I Can Play piano system by Fisher Price uses video game technology to teach kids the piano basics. This interactive, musical toy has a graphics and a musical color-coding system to turn every song into a delightful game. The child plays along on a three-octave keyboard that plugs right into the television. Music is represented on the screen as moving images. At first, the images are colored to match the keys on the keyboard. They slowly move up from the bottom of the screen and pass over a line at the top. As the child pushes on the matching colored key, they hear themselves playing music. The tempo of the song can be sped up or slowed down and played with one or both hands. As the child progresses through the different song modes, game play gradually get a little more complicated. The images begin to scroll sideways and morph into colored musical notes. Eventually, the notes scroll to the side and are colored black, like a real music sheet. Kids will learn to read music by first identifying the keys on the keyboard, then associating the keys with notes. Best for children four through eight, this engaging toy can spark a life-long interest in music.
