We do NOT have the workbench so I can NOT comment on the oral directions. The picture directions could be a little clearer. For a parent putting this together it is simple even without the blueprint, but my young children (2 & 4 1/2) usually want help. With toys like this you have to have balance: not too hard so that it is not overly frustrating and not too easy least it be boring and less educational. I think this toy is relatively balanced. There are 2 extra holes on top (see picture) I don't know why... maybe just to give you more options for building it; but there are not 2 extra screws so if you put screws here you won't have enough for the rest. Maybe they want to test you to see if you will follow directions or maybe it was originally designed with more screws then after production started they took 2 screws out and changed the directions to save money, I don't know, but I find the extra holes annoying and they take a away from the look of the finished boat. (but its not a big deal) With or without the 2 extra holes I wish they included 2 extra screws in case you loose a few, or at least make replacement screws available for purchase. If it came with 2 extra screws I would have given it 5 stars for durability instead of 4. Worst case you could buy another project and share screws. There is a helicopter, a race car, & a dragster. (all of which I have bought but I'm saving for my sons birthday, review to follow) I keep this toy in a big zip bag so I can keep everything together. I think this is a great toy with or without the Handy Manny's Repair Shop (tool-bench) but even though I already own the Step 2 Real Projects Workshop; I am considering buying the Handy Manny Repair Shop since we now have 6 projects and I think having the directions read to him by Handy Manny would be really cool. My son is really into tools and loves these types of toys even though he never wants to watch Handy Manny the show.
