Customer Review: Great buy, though it has a LARGE footprint!

We bought this when my son was 3 1/2. It was a Christmas present -- yes, I know I'm late in posting my review :) -- and we set it up on Christmas Eve for him. If you're going to do it for your kids, I'd recommend this to avoid the set-up pressure of your child hanging over you in anticipation of its completion. When we did set it up we did have concerns about the following:
1. The trains operate much more slowly than we anticipated. BUT, this didn't matter to my son then and, really, doesn't matter to him now.
2. We got an expanded set only sold through Toys 'R Us during the holidays for under a $100 (AND an additional $20 in coupons thanks to my wonderful wifey). That said, it takes up a rather large footprint (roughly 4'x 3' depending on the configuration we use). If you look on the back of the box, you'll see the total layout (beautifully set up in the addition you'll need to put on your house to store it in).
Those two small concerns aside, this is a great toy. Our son, now 4 1/2, AND our 2 1/2-year old daughter both enjoy this. I have to say our daughter still doesn't get the whole forwards/backwards controller concept but she is 2. Our son (then 3 1/2) got it immediately right out of the box.
The durability has withstood both of our kids; the tracks are quite thick and both of our children have either stepped on or sat on Grand Central Station with no ill effects to the toy (or them). It stayed out for months when we first got it and then we packed it up in a large Rubbermaid container. It comes out periodically for a couple of weeks at a time and usually gets attacked by or co-opted with whatever the kids are playing with at the time: Playmobil, Little People, etc.
We have never regretted this purchase and have expanded the set with additional controllers (fire engine, snow plow) which we would HIGHLY recommend you do if you have friends who play with your kids. These additional controllers aren't that expensive so you could recommend these as purchases for family members or friends. This will prevent tensions over sharing and expand the play time because it is fun to get a few of them on the track at the same time. Oh, and we would recommend that you NOT purchase more of the non-motorized cars. Our kids have never been that interested in them.
Lastly, and this is more a practical concern that you probably already are aware of, you'll need batteries for the controllers AND the trains. The trains will slow down as the batteries die, BUT your kids are probably like ours and use that as an opportunity to crash the slow trains off the track. :)

The Grand Central Terminal offers the same classic GeoTrax play that kids love, now with the addition of articulated figures. There's so much to explore in the main terminal building, which is the central hub of all the action. There is an information area with a destination board, food and vending stations and an elevator with mechanical action. Drop cargo through to the lower level, or make your way to the train yard. Two platform areas -- one for passengers and one for cargo -- connect to the upper level by an escalator and conveyer belt. Durable and Easy to Use The toy is constructed from durable plastic and features large pieces perfect for little hands. The big, easy-to-use remote control makes the train go backward or forward and has a range of about 12 feet. It includes an automatic shut-off feature to preserve battery life. The sturdy train track snaps together easily in a variety of configurations, and the whole set can be used with other GeoTrax accessories. Adult assembly is required; you will need a Phillips screwdriver. The remote control and train engine require three AAA batteries apiece.
