Toys and Games Reviews of Fisher-Price Dora the Explorer My Talking Backpack

Customer Review: My Kids Love it Despite it's Faults!
Summary: 4 Stars

Yes the opening is small and yes the lid flies open when you try to carry it around, but my now 3 year old still plays with it! We've had this toy for a year now and it still gets used and even fought over often. My almost 2 year old niece is addicted to it. So much that we're buying her one for Christmas this year! They like to put all kinds of things in it, drag it around by the handle and dump it. The Backpack song is bonus and will still entertain my 3 year old for unbelievable amounts of time... over and over and over. Despite it's faults it is amazingly sturdy too. I can't even tell you how many times this thing has been thrown down, stepped on, and abused. So, for functinality I would give it 2 stars - because it is hard to get larger items in and out and the lid doesn't stay closed, for durability a full 5 - like I said, it is near indestructable!, and kid approval in my house gets a full 5 stars as - for some reason they just love it, so who am I to argue??

Customer Review: Not as Bad as they are saying
Summary: 4 Stars

We got this backpack second hand. It had no batteries or toys inside. We put some small toys inside, and my daughter 'decorated' it with her crayons and stickers. True, it is not a real backpack, and true, the opening is small, but I can easily fit my hand inside to get things out. My daughter is 3 now, and has had it since she was about 2. She has never had a problem opening it, or having it stay closed. It still needs batteries, and she has been asking for new ones for about 6 months. I am reluctant to get them because i anticipate an annoying array of sounds... but overall, this toy has brought her hours and HOURS of pleasure, and she likes to fill it with crayons, a little pad of paper, and a couple of the fisher price little people. Not nearly as bad as everyone is saying!

Customer Review: Okay toy, but hard to find replacement batteries!
Summary: 2 Stars

I bought this for my daughter when she was about 20 months. She is a big Dora fan, and I thought it would be fun because it plays the song backpack sings in the show, along with the other things backpack says. It is hard to get the toys out of the small opening. She needs help with that from time to time. The worst part about this toy is that the batteries ran out about 4 months after we had it, and we're having a hard time finding replacment batteries for it. It takes 3 small watch type batteries! I don't know why they would make a toy that doesn't take the standard AAA or AA batteries. So consequently, we haven't replaced them.
She does still like to carry it around, but is disappointed when the songs and sayings don't play.
I wouldn't recommend this toy.

Customer Review: NOT a real backpack! May disappoint hardcore fans
Summary: 3 Stars

This is not actually a backpack!
It is a plastic box with a handle to carry. There are several accessories: a Map, a kalidescope "telescope", a nonworking compass and nonworking video camera.
For hardcore Dora wannabes, this product may disappoint - it doesn't have a "star pocket" or a side pocket for her faithful traveling companion, Map.
It's a "talking" product but when you take it out of the box and remove the tag from the battery case, the demonstration "talking" stops. The included batteries are for demonstration purposes only.
It does not take standard batteries, like "AA" or "AAA" - it takes "AG 13"("LR 44") button-sized batteries which may be harder to find.

Customer Review: Save your money
Summary: 1 Stars

I bought the "backpack" for my 2 year old daughter - it instantly turned into a source of frustration for her. 1 - the backpack opening is too small and it is hard to put items in and take out, even I had trouble. 2 - the backpack is NOT a backpack, there is only a carrying handle. My daughter wanted it on her back, like Dora wears it. I ended up tying ribbon to the bag handle and taping it on the bottom so she can wear it on her back. That being said, I really do not want her walking around with a hard plastic item on her back. I plan on purchasing a fabric backpack instead.

The only positive comment I have is that the phrases the backpack plays are cute...
