Toys and Games Reviews of Fisher Price Diego's Talking Rescue CenterCustomer Review: Love it, but need Alicia! Summary: 5 Stars
We bought this Dec '06 and haven't had any quality issues. After reading about all those recalls with specific date ranges, I am guessing that there are manufacturing consistencies over time, so that may be one of the sources of disagreement on this topic. Also, I do have two very gentle girls (3.5 & 2, the 2 y.o. is more into the toy) so it hasn't had to withstand any beatings. The Rescue Center is definitely the inspiration for a lot of creative play. The girls use other random animal figures that we already had with this. Between the car, helicopter, and animals, there is lots to do. We don't use the cord to slide or the elevator so much b/c it's a little harder to manipulate and I likely need to sit down with them and do it a few times.
They ask about Alicia all the time, I'd pay up for an Alicia figure. Right now we pretend Dora is Alicia.
We forgot to put batteries in it (didn't realize they took them) and the girls still love it. One day I may go ahead and put them in and see if it becomes a whole new toy for them.
Customer Review: Not the best Summary: 2 Stars
My 3 yo son got this for Christmas. He'd been asking for it for a long time, and we were so excited to see him finally get to play with it. The excitement soon wore off, for us and for him. Like others here have said, it falls apart very easily. The zip line doesn't stay attached at all, the legs come out with very little effort, the elevator is difficult to work, etc. My son loved the toy but got frustrated a lot when it kept coming apart. Right now all the pieces are in a heap in a corner of his room. He told me the other day to give it to his little brother because he doesn't like it anymore. We are going to try to superglue it together and see if that helps. It's not like he could play with it any less! I do like how many accessories it comes with. The animals and jeep are fun to play with on their own or with other Diego toys that we have. If you don't mind putting the set back together several times a day, you and your child might like this toy. Otherwise, look for something sturdier.
Customer Review: Son Loves It Even Though He Asks For Alicia Summary: 4 Stars
I've been reading the reviews on this toy AFTER buying it. LOL. Yes, I'm awful about buying a toy and then reading its reviews. However, I purchased this set at a yard sale for an awesome price so I'm very pleased. I just wanted to add how funny it is that many of the reviews request an Alicia figure to be added to the set. The first thing my son said when pulling out the pieces to put this together is, "Where is Alicia?" So apparently he thinks Alicia should be a part of this set as well!
As for the problem with the zip line falling off constantly, what I did was just tape the zip line at the top so it would stay on. This seems to have worked very well. It also helps keep the shed at the bottom from falling over when Diego comes down the line.
This is a nice toy, and if you find it cheap at a yard sale or consignment shop I say go for it. However, I think if you were to purchase at retail price in the store, you would be disappointed.
Customer Review: Get it on sale and you'll love it! Summary: 4 Stars
We were looking for a playset of some kind for our 2 year old (and the fact that it was Diego was so lucky because he loves Diego) that would be age appropriate. He seems to be pretty ahead of the curve for playing with things with pieces they way they are intended and staying entertained, but we didn't want something too old. This rescue center sets up easily to be a decent size and has lots of fun pieces and animals and accessories that go with it. We paid about $40 for ours and I feel that it was a decent value. Diego is cute and has a vehicle as well as the helicpoter, which we love and works really well. It makes little, but appropriate noise. I think that many of the other reviewers probably paid full price and/or bought it for the wrong type of child or wrong age. It doesn't have to work perfectly for a 2-3 year old to be happy, and ours is really happy. Manage your expectations and get this on sale and you will be happy with the purchase.
Customer Review: Not Super Impressed Summary: 3 Stars
My 5 year old insisted on asking Santa for this. We thought he'd be bored with it, and he is. My 3 year daughter enjoys it more, so I would stay in the 2-3.5 age range. My biggest complaint, though, is the quality of this toy. The door does not stay shut, the legs are not secured well enough in the base, and the elevator is IMPOSSIBLE to use. When you attempt to use it, either the legs pull out of the base or you pull so hard everything falls off the elevator or out of the treehouse. My own personal pet peeve is the noise. Every toy that makes noise should have a volume switch!! This does have an on/off switch, but it would be nice to turn the volume down without shutting it off completely. The Deigo figure is nice and solid and fits nicely in the helicopter and cart. Around Christmas this item was $36. Certainly not worth that much! Maybe worth $15-20 if you're buying for a young child and are aware of the design problems.
