Toys and Games Reviews of Fisher-Price Baby Playzone: Pull Up Ball BlastCustomer Review: My son loves this toy. Summary: 4 Stars
I bought this toy for my son after seeing it in the store at a good price. My wife made me decide between this and a soft stacking toy and I decided to get this. The only complaint I have about this toy is that you have to put it together, which is not that hard, but the way it looks in the unopened box you would think it was already asembled. I guess I have to get used to putting toys together. Anyway, this is a pretty basic toy, all it is is a spiral track where you can roll the balls down and they come out of one of the four exits at the bottom. You can also drop a ball down the hole in the top instead of having it go down the spiral. Whenever you put a ball at the top of the spiral, it plays music and the little light flash in different colors. However, eventhough it is a basic toy, my son loves it, whenever the music comes on he smiles and begins to dance, he also likes following the balls as they get to the bottom of the spiral and then he chases after them when they pop out of the bottom. He also enjoys looking at the lights and grabs at them too. I was kind of worried that he would pull up on it one day and it would fall over on him but it hasn't happened, which is a pleasant suprise. This is one of his favorite toys.
Customer Review: Provided years of fun for our kids Summary: 5 Stars
We just retired our Ball Blast toy after two solid years of use by both of our children. It was a gift for my older son when he was not quite a year old, and now my younger daughter is almost 2. She's more interested in drawing than in playing with balls or we'd still have it out.
This toy has been almost unbelievably durable for us. It's survived a cross-country move in a U-Haul and years worth of children climbing on it, turning it sideways, flipping it upside down, jamming Hot Wheels cars through it -- you name it, our kids have done it. But it still looks just about as good as the day we got it. Additionally, we only ever had to change the batteries one time.
One of the reasons the kids liked this toy so much is that they could use it in different ways. You can use it as intended, by dropping balls through the top and listening to the music, but you can also use the ramp for Hot Wheels cars, you can turn it upside down and see how the ramp works backwards, you can use it as a pulling-up toy for pre-walkers -- ours was sturdy and we didn't have a problem with it falling over. I would recommend this toy to anyone, and this is from someone who generally avoids battery-powered toys.
Customer Review: Good toy for a standing baby Summary: 4 Stars
I purchased this for my 9 month old son to give him something to play with now that he likes to stand up to play. Assembly is not to bad if you do not force it and slide the rails into the tracks. Your child should already have master standing up prior to using this toy because it can be pulled over if the child pulls on it too hard. My son likes to push the balls through the holes in the top to produce the music and bang on the top of it with the balls. It took in a few days to figure out how to find the balls after they dropped down so now he can do it without me handing him the balls. It usually keeps his interest for about 15 minutes at a time and that is good for him. He is now at the point (10 months)where he will be playing with it and the next thing I know, he is standing without having to hold on. My only concern regarding the toy is that my son sometimes reaches into the holes on the top to grab the rails. This could be an issue if the child fell over. The music it plays is OK. I have learned to tuneout most of the sounds that the toys make to keep me sane and only get concerned when it is too quiet.
Overall I feel that it is a good toy for a child that can stand and is worth the $20.00!
Customer Review: Lots of hype Summary: 2 Stars
I bought this for my son for Christmas based upon the Toys-R-Us review on the Amazon web page. What I got was a glorified noise maker. My son loves the music that this toys makes, sort of a techno-bopping kid-giggling series of tunes. But the ball dropping portion of the toy is a HUGE let down. There is a button on the top of the toy (see the blue circle in the picture) that the kid can press to make the sounds, so they don't even need to drop the ball to get the music. Second, there were no dials to spin on the side to redirect the ball as it moved down the spiral. I don't know if they just left out that part of the design, or what. So the balls just spiral down the side and all come out the same hole at the bottom. The toy is fairly large and takes up quite a bit of floor space considering that it's primary function is making music. Also, there's nowhere to securely store the balls on the toy, so if you're like us, your cats will find the balls and bap them away until they are all nicely hidden under the nearest dresser or armoire. I would not recommend this toy for anyone, if it weren't for the cute music, we would have ditched it by now (and we've only had it for three months).
Customer Review: Very unsafe and incredibly badly designed Summary: 1 Stars
My son got this for his first birthday. He was already standing and crab-walking around things, but he hurt himself on this thing repeatedly, because the ball return things at the bottom stick out and he'd trip over them, usually pulling this thing over on top of himself when he fell holding on to it. The last straw was when he got his foot stuck stepping in one of the ball returns and twisted it when he fell. His ankle swelled and we went to the doctor's office, thankfully it was just bruised... By the way, the balls never came out of those ball return things and it's just the right size to get an average-sized woman's hand stuck when you reach in to get them (you can see them). You can get them out by tipping it up on it's ball return "feet", but you're kid is holding on to it, so that's hardly practical. Also be careful reaching in those ball return holes--the plastic in there has sharp edges. Honestly I don't know who designed this thing. Also ..., where ours was bought, refused to take it back, "because it's been played with" and Fisher Price, who I'd always thought was a really good company, never answered the email I sent them about it. Don't, DON'T, buy this toy!
