Toys and Games Reviews of Fisher-Price Baby Playzone: Pull Up Ball Blast

Customer Review: not totally stable
Summary: 4 Stars

This is a good toy and it still attracts attention during playgroup (balls! colors! lights! it's tall but not taller than your kids!) BUT it is not as stable as I thought it would be when I first purchased it. It fell over on my son as soon as he tried to pull himself up on it, the base is more flimsy than the picture appears and is either not wide enough or thick enough. My son was 50 percentile in weight in height so I don't think his size was the issue.
The stability is my ONLY criticism of this toy (well OK sometimes I wish I could turn the music OFF OFF OFF). It was kind of annoying having to always hold it on one side while my son pulled himself up on it but once he started walking it was OK. SO if there is any way you can test-drive this sucker at a store or at a friend's house, please do. If it works for you than it's a good buy.
My son worked on grabbing the balls and learned how to drop them through the holes, push them through the holes and push the music/sound triggers (buttons and the small levers the balls hit on their way through the handles/holes). That alone was worth the purchase. I've had the toy almost a year now (from when he was 6 mos to 18 mos I think), it was always easy to clean up with some alcohol after playgroups and there was ALWAYS a child playing on it.

Customer Review: A hit!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this toy for my son when he was 8 mos old. He is now almost 13 mos and still loves this toy. He loves the music (which admittedly is reminiscent of disco), the lights (the lights are quite fun in a semi-dark room) and loves to watch the balls come down too. I think this toy is great because it involves a number of senses (sight, hearing, touch) and it teaches him cause and effect. This toy gets him to move, too: he has to bend down to pick up the balls and then stand up to put them in the holes. I also love this toy because it's one of the few that my son consistently plays with instead of losing interest in after a few days. This toy was recommended by my cousin whose 2 yr old son still plays with his. I do have a niece, though, who is almost 14 mos and doesn't love it nearly as much as the boys do. (Perhaps there's a gender issue?) When my son started to pull up, we did have to hold it down. But it wasn't a big deal for us because my husband or I would always be playing with him or watching him. After he became good at pulling up however, he could pull up on the toy without causing it to tip over. I think this is a great toy for babies, especially boys. A word of caution, if you have cats, don't forget to put the balls away when your child is done playing!

Customer Review: THIS WASN'T A GOOD 2 Stars

I have to agree with some of the other parents about this toy's steadiness. My son is 8 months old and wants to stand up all the time. My husband and I purchased this toy for him, thinking that it would assist him with his standing.........NOT. We truly thought the toy was designed better than it is. Every time my son attempts to stand up by holding on the handles, he and the toy pummels to the floor, almost immediately. Secondly, the sounds are great but I think mom and dad enjoys this part more than than the baby himself. He just looks at the toy wondering if anything exciting is going to happen, so he opts to play with the balls by rolling them on the floor instead. We try to show him how to push the balls through, so that they could go through the process of rolling down the tunnel, he likes it until the balls stop. He follows our lead by pushing the ball through the top, watches it roll and stop and then looks at me and dad, wondering why can't we catch on that this toy is EXTREMELY BORING to him. Don't get me wrong, we have bought several toys by leapfrog and are absolutely pleased with them but this one just doesn't holds his interest. And, THIS TOY ISN'T VERY EDUCATIONAL AT ALL. What does it teaches a child to do besides becoming irritated from of interest.

Customer Review: Great fun for the kids, VERY hard to put together!
Summary: 5 Stars

We got this for my 9 month old daughter for Christmas. Had I known how hard it was to put together, we would have assembled it before Christmas day. No way were we going to be able to get this put together in the midst of all the family gift exchange, kids playing, etc. So it got left behind at the grandparents house, where we were having the gift exchange. The grandparents put it together -- but it took 1 1/2 hours of them both working together on it for them to get this assembled, they told me it was very difficult (I know when I tried on Christmas day I was getting nowhere with it).

But the kids (even my 8 yr old) had great fun with it when they finally got to take the assembled toy home. My 8yr old daughter was showing her 9 month old sister how to drop the balls in and exclaimed "This is FUN!". My 9mo can easily pull herself up to standing with this. The main thing she's tried to do with the balls so far is just put them in her mouth, she hasn't gotten the hang on dropping the balls in or pushing the button on top to play the music. But if one of her sisters helps her with it she smiles, laughs, and sways back and forth to the music. Looks like this will be something where the older ones won't mind helping to entertain their little sister!

Customer Review: Great for one year old
Summary: 5 Stars

My twin girls got this toy for their 1st birthday, and they loved it!! They could pull up on it, and it didn't tip over like their push car. Just to compare, they took their first steps just a week or so before their 1st birthday, so they were barely walking. The toy is educational because it teaches cause and effect. The music is upbeat, so they liked dancing to it. It isn't annoying or really loud, and it doesn't go on forever. They figured out they could just push the button instead of putting the balls in, so that was great for their fine motor development. Also, they had to figure out where the balls went and they had to reach into the bottom to retrieve the balls. It is great fun because the music and lights entertain them as they keep putting balls into the top in 4 different slots. The best part is that they usually put it in the 3 slots that the music is the shortest duration (just a litte sound effect). The toy has held up well, and the batteries seemed to last a long time. The only problem we had was that when we were putting it together, we had two of the same piece, so I had to call. They sent us an entire new Ball Blast. So, I felt that was a waste of materials, but we got it together. Overall, this is a great toy!!
