We got this the other day as a gift unexpectedly. What a great idea! Have always wanted to get the boys an ant farm and this gel makes it so easy to see what is happening. The LED light is BRIGHT, filling my living room! So happens that both of my children are studying insects in their seperate schools so the kids are taking turns taking the habitat, but today is my day to have it at work.
Anyone that thinks ants come with ant farms is ubsurd and impatient. They would have all the tunnels started and you would miss the first stage of the experience. We woke some harvesters out of hibernation in our yard, and as they die, plan to add to our collection from the same anthill. What a pleasant study in nature to gather them ourselves!
The lid on this model fits TIGHT! I broke 2 nails and ended up having to pry the top off with a stick. That was my biggest concern. Comes with an booklet full of ant facts that is readable to an 8 year old. We were amazed!

Not wanting to fill my sons' christmas with just toys I bought him this ant farm and hoped he'd like it.
Well, not only does HE love it, but the whole family gather round it daily to check out the ants progress. For 2 days after we put the ants in there was not much going on, but on day 3 they started tunneling and now there is an entire network of cleverly made tunnels, and you can watch them making the tunnels. The light feature is brilliant for close examination of the ants but we've found that the ants prefer to work with the light off - so I wouldn't recommend keeping the light on all day. The harvester ants that we ordered have really big jaws and they chew away the gel and then take it away to be deposited above ground. It's the most fascinating thing, watching them create an environment for themselves. I HIGHLY recommend this ant farm to anyone whose child (or parents!) is interested in bugs of any sort. These ants are truly remarkable!

I was a bit skeptical at first when my first shipment of ants arrived and only 4 had survived due to a cracked, plastic test tube. I put the 4 live ones in and they never did anything. Little did I know they were just smart enough to not bother with so few workers. Ants Alive guarantees their ants and happily sent me another batch and I put them in yesterday and they have gone to town!! I find myself glued to watching them. My only suggestion for improvement would be to make tank taller because once they start digging out they place their nuggets on top and can easily climb out so it makes it near impossible to take the top off to give them a second of air or to fish dead ones out. As soon as they get a whiff of the top opening they all dive for the top. For the price - you absolutely cannot beat this as a gift for a kid. We are all fascinated by it and in awe of what they can accomplish in such a short time. Would recommend this to anyone!Customer Review: Good Product, Antsalive.com is HORRIBLE!

Well I love the Antworks product itself, It lights up and looks like 4 big spotlights shining up its really cool but do NOT trust Antsalive or Lifestudies to buy your ants. I called them Monday and said "I need the fastest shipping you have so the ants dont die in the freezing winter temperatures" and they said "Well standard shipping is guaranteed by Thursday and thats free" so I accepted, well its saturday and still no ants! They ALSO are only open 9-2 Mon through Thursday, and NEVER answer their phone during business hours. They'll FOR SURE be dead by Monday if they even come then, find another company, they arent trustworthy at all whatsoever. Now I'm gonna have to reorder them cause i'm only gonna recieve a frozen tube full of dead ants because they're liars. Buy the product, its really good, but either find another ant supplier or pay the overnight 20.00 so they live in the winter temps, and dont trust their lies about arrival times.Customer Review: The Ants go Marching

This is a very neat toy. I gathered my own large ants from the backyard, but could only get six in since they were so active and I couldn't fit them in under the top without squashing a few. The ants created a few tunnels, however they mostly stay on top and wait to escape. I thought ants were supposed to have a better work ethic!
Regardless of the performance plan that the ants need to be on, it's amazing to watch them work. We have enjoyed this educational toy and use it as a night light. After about three weeks, only two out of the six ants were left. I'm going to have to try the suggestion made by another user and put the farm in the fridge to calm them down before adding more ants.
I don't think that this toy would survive it I were to drop it, but other than that I'm ok keeping it in the house since it's sturdy enough for the ants to not escape.
