Toys and Games Reviews of Fascinations AntWorks Illuminated BlueCustomer Review: Whoops Summary: 4 Stars
I got this for Christmas 07, and just got my ants (summer 08), since I did not want them to die in the cold. I ordered from the form in the back of the book, and 19/25 ants survived the journey. Not bad for a couple of bucks. But I wanted to warn everyone:
This stuff is Gel. It moves, depending on how it sits. So for the last several months, I've had it in the box, sitting on its side. All the gel separated from from the edge, and left a huge area for the ants to crawl along the side. Its neat to see the ants up close, but all they are doing right now is tearing the side apart. Had I known the gel separated, I could have easily pushed it back, since its essentially Jello consistency. This was completely my fault, so I might get a new one eventually just to see how its really supposed to work.
So I would recommend to anyone who might get this during the winter. If you are going to store it for some reason, make sure you store it standing up, so the gel stays put.

Fascinations ANTW2 Antworks Illuminated
I have had the most fun watching the ants work and build the tunnels through the gel substance. I have spent more time with this "toy" than anything in recent history. I have always been interested in science and biology, but nothing compares to this ant farm. My friends laughed at me when I said I was getting an ant farm (I'm 42), but once I showed them this one and all the work the ants had done in just a few days, they too were amazed. This item could easily grab the attention of any child and perhaps spark an interest in studying more about ants or other living creatures. Perhaps your child (or even you) would love one of these, and at this price, you can't beat it. The best part is once the ants die (about 2 or 3 months), you still have their work to admire. Turn on the lights and just look at the glistening tunnels. It's fantastic!
Customer Review: Very Cool Summary: 5 Stars
Pros:
- Design is very cool, blue lights make it easy to see in 3-d
- Don't have to feed ants, Gel provides nutrients they needs. Therefore they don't all go running out the top when you open it.
- Can really get a great sense of how they build the tunnels since it is also thick where they can build horizontally rather than just vertically like in a traditional ant farm.
Cons:
- I expected to be able to see the ants in the tunnels. However you can only see them on the ones they build against the wall. However, almost all the tunnels are built against one wall or the other so you can just look on either side to see the ants running through the tunnels.
- If you follow the instructions and use the provided stick to make 4 starter tunnels to help them get started, be sure to make them pretty big. I pushed the stick in the gel 4 different time but I guess I didn't hollow the hole out large enought because they didn't even use them.
Customer Review: Could be dangerous Summary: 2 Stars
Well we bought this for our 7yr old son for Christmas and a week later we ordered the ants.. The ants arrived in great condition (only 2 dead). We dumped the ants in and waited about 1 day for the tunnels to start. Our family enjoyed watching the ants for about the first month. The ants would make tunnel after tunnel for days, we loved it. But.... After about the first month all the ants (who my son named Judy because you couldn't tell them about, you had to name them the same name) seemed to be on the top with all the little balls they had collected from the tunnel digging.. They we noticed the little buggers all around the top of the habitat eating the rubber seal. I could NOT tape the top of the habitat fast enough!! I don't know what would of happened if we never noticed them eating the rubber seal.. I think this is an awesome thing for learning about ants behaviors and watching them up close. However... I really think they should have some sort of warning on the box!
Customer Review: Great educational aquarium Summary: 4 Stars
When aquarium arrived - everybody were very excited. Ants arrived little bit later, but as soon as we were holding a small tube with living little creatures - at the same time they were in their new habitat. As everybody says it took'em about 2 days for adaptation period and then... those sons of the sheep started to dig. It is fascinating to be able to see what ants do underground, see how they cut gel with their small but powerfull mandibles, how they carry just cut particles of gel out, on a surface, how they build tunnels under and above the surface and most amazing how they, without any instruments, are able perfectly connect tunnels in depth. Only one thing - after about two months they stoped digging. Maybe they got old, maybe too hot(cold), but now they are sitting on the top of tunnels and doing nothing. Well... we will see what's going to happen next but I would like to refill Aquarium with new gel and ants. Definatly worth buying. (sory for my english).
