Toys and Games Reviews of Fascinations AntWorks Illuminated BlueCustomer Review: Wonderful (if you like ants) Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this little ant farm not expecting too much. It came quickly and I ordered ants which came in about 4-5 days. I followed the directions by refrigerating the ants for 10 min. then dumped the ants into the "farm." The ants ran around like chickens with their heads cut off for half a day. When I work up the next morning, the ants had dug a tunnel and were starting to go horizontal. The genius of this is that the gel is clear, so you can see everything the ants do. Now, about five days later, the ants have totally excavated the entire gel, just like you see in the pictures. It is fascinating and my grandchildren went nuts over it. My wife, who wasn't excited about having ants in the house, loves it.
I have heard that some people have had ants arrive dead. When they first arrived, I thought some were dead, but they all eventually started moving around. I had the ants sent to my PO box so they wouldn't be exposed to a hot mail box (I live in Arizona). So far, the ants are doing great.
I wish the farm was larger, maybe twice as big, but I am surprised at how fascinating they are even in this small farm. This has been educational and great fun. Highly recommended.
Customer Review: AntHome for the Holidays Summary: 4 Stars
I had all of my important Christmas shopping done weeks ago. But there were still the 'Others' on my list -- the in-laws, for instance, the catty neighbors and the dyslexic mailman -- to buy for. I searched long and hard to find just the right items to let them know that I'm not really interested in exchanging presents any longer -- that from now on, every gift begins with 'GUH!'
What gift says to someone "I don't especially like you"? An ant farm has to be high on the list. Basically, you're asking the recipient to display live insects in their living room, while opening wide the possibility of future breakage, nasty carpet stains and years of six-legged infestations. See, THAT'S a gift that keeps on giving.
Now if you load the farm full of radioactive blue gunk to draw even more attention to it, AND make the givee actually order their own ants through the mail, then you've really sent a holiday message. And I think that message is: "I would totally plant evidence in your basement to frame you for a crime."
I bought one each of these for my boss, my dentist, my tax auditor and the guy next door who rakes his leaves into my yard. O joyous day.
Customer Review: Great fun Summary: 5 Stars
I received one of these ant farms for Christmas last year and waited all winter for the ants. Once we got them they went nuts!! The entire family enjoyed watching these busy workers dig and dig. But after a few months they just stopped digging. A few died but the others just stood around. I let that go on a few weeks even after poking a couple new holes on the top of the gel but they just would not dig any longer. So I let them go and ordered a second batch and they dug like crazy for a couple months then just stopped.
The tunnel system they left behind is amazing. There is a product made by antworks called "Antworks sculpture kit". It consist of a illuminated base and a two part resin. After the ants are done digging you rinse the ant farm out with water, let dry and mix and pour the resin in the gel with tunnels. It fills up the tunnels and hardens into a hard clear plastic. You rinse the gel away and you have a very nice illuminated work of art. Just do a google search for antworks products. You can even get replacement gel for the antfarm to do it all over again.
Customer Review: ant farm Summary: 5 Stars
We purchased this farm on a whim for our daughters 6th birthday. Fortunately for us it only took two days to arrive and it made it in time for her party. We chose to get our own ants from the yard. Our kids loved insects and collecting ants proved to be the best part of the whole experience. Getting the ants into the farm was the most challenging part of it. They are fast little buggers -- now try putting 10 - 15 ants together, and they want to go every which direction!! I would suggest when you transfer them from the container that you collect them in into the farm that you do it OUTSIDE so that when they escape, they wont be running all over your house! Adding more ants is even more challenging. When you take the cover off, they all want to escape. My only wish with the farm would be a trap door or something easier to add ants. It takes several batches ants for them to dig long, decent tunnels. The container itself is very durable and has withstood several falls off the cupboard. Overall, I would recommend this product. It is very interesting to watch them dig -- even for the adults.
Customer Review: Not what I expected. Summary: 2 Stars
I purchased this ant farm to teach my children about the ant colonies and let them watch them build. The problem is that it is very difficult to catch the ants, then once you do..you try to put them inside the container without the other ants escaping. Some ants died in the process of opening and shutting the container top on them. The ones that did survive never built anything in the gel (I did put the holes in the gel, the ants just never went into them) Somehow the ants were able to escape. In my process of catching the ants dirt was also in the mix, so now my gel ant farm is a dirty gel ant farm. (I know you can wash it, etc) It is just too much of a hassle. After getting frustrated and reading the book...to find out what was going wrong.....I realized the gel ant farm makers recommend their ants....so I guess that is really what I should have done....purchased their ants along with their gel ant farm. We were all disappointed that we didnt have a thriving ant farm. I think the best solution is the old fashioned dirt ant farm for us....or order our the ants...
