This ant farm keeps both our 3- and 7-year-old kids engrossed, not to mention their 42-year-old dad.
Received it as a gift for the kids. Immediately sent away for the recommended harvester ants (for a few bucks using the included form), which arrived a week or two later. Loaded the test tube of ants into the habitat without trouble, and watched. Within 24 hours the ants were tunneling, and a week later they're still going strong.
It's remarkable to watch the ants doing their stuff and almost as remarkable to watch the kids watching the ants.

I wish I had a video of the ants in our ant farm. This is a fascinating thing to watch. Within 24hrs. the ants had dug 2 tunnels, and a few days later there were ant freeways all over the place. What has gotten really interesting is watching the ants chew through the rubber/silicone seals in the corners of the lid. The lid seems a bit tight for them to actually escape, but we'll see. The students in my classroom are enthralled with the whole process. I plan to get another ant farm so that we always have ants to watch when this batch complete their life cycle.Customer Review: Husband and Son both loved it

This is a great little ant farm. I loved it because the lid sealed on tight - so even if it dropped it didn't open. Also, you don't have to open the lid at all to feed the ants. Although, my husband would have preferred to be able to feed them. It's very easy to see the ants and fun to watch them build their tunnels. Although, after a few weeks they built all that they wanted too and seem to be rather bored in there. So, it became rather dull. But, it was fun to watch them build while they did. The ants lived about 2-3 months.Customer Review: it didn't come with an illuminator...

The blue gel looks cool but the one I ordered didn't include the illuminator! It also showed where multiple "farms" can be connected and that part isn't available either on the one I recieved. What a let down.
Things to make this "toy" better?
1. Make it larger! It's actually pretty small and whimpy for the price.
2. Be honest and show what is actually included and what has to be ordered seperately!
3. W/ regard to recieving ants...include info on where to get them when ordering the ant farm.

My boys (3 and 5) love their new ant friends, and check in on them throughout the day to marvel at their tunnelling success. But I think I like it even more! I catch myself sitting down and watching them for 15 mnutes at a time. Even better than a fish tank. I would recommend this for kids 5 and up, and adults, too! My one complaint is that the ants do not come with it, which was disappointing. My Dad got this for the kids and thought ants were included. They only cost 4 dollars and take about a week to arrive.
