Customer Review: Another toy for the obsessed masses
Summary: 4 Stars
Let me qualify this review by stating first it is far from impartial. I have been a rabid follower of talisman, and in fact most similar products, for well over half my life. the closest I can provide to impartiality is an assessment of the product in relation to other expansions and versions which preceded it.
The Board- Serves it's purpose well, though not as visually striking as the dungeon corner board. Of particular note are several spaces which seem to be lower-level analogues of dungeon-y spaces focused on random movement and such. Special frustration is still reserved for the forgotten city space, which can actually issue you a talisman (or even relic) as a result of a random die roll...anyone who has rolled there eyes at the lucky son of a...who pulled a talisman out of their ass (or the adventure card stack), will be truly thrilled at watching their opponent cash in on the purest of luck-but I digress. simply put the board is adequate, functional, and pretty much as expected in the quality department (to this day the only portions of my collection showing undue wear are the old black industries components) Total-4/5
The Characters- These run the typical talisman range from grossly overpowered to utterly useless, with a few flavors in between. Already the vampiress and alchemist cause uncomfortable shuffling in the group, while the concept of a leprechaun/pixie death match strikes me as one of the longest evenings in talisman history. in truth there's not a whole lot of new mechanic here, even the severely O.P. alchemist is little more than the city space ported onto a character card. the glaring exception to this is the high entertainment value to be had in the highlander character coupled with the battle royal alt. ending card, or as we like to call it, "there can be only one" mode. Total-3/5
The Cards- In my opinion this is where the highlands starts to come into its own as an expansion. the introduction of trinkets (marginal items which do not apply to your carry limit) is a fabulous idea, and one that I hope sees more fleshing out in future releases, if for no other reason to broaden their use (most are simple turn in at x square for x gold affairs). Also on the list of new favs is the mindwipe (or something to that effect) spell. essentially a spell-jacker for that cocky bastid across the table who keeps pawing their spell cards with a "just can't wait" look on their face. Nothing induces the dreaded rage-quit like master stroking someone's master stroke-good fun. Total-4.5/5
Overall- Honestly if you already own the talisman core set and any of the expansions, you're probably not reading this because buying everything talisman is one of your little no-brainers (we should start a club or something), but if you are on the fence, or only own the core set and are looking to determine where to begin your expansion I will give you this to consider-
*If you're looking for a drastic change in game play dynamic, the reaper expansion might be for you instead, it adds a whole new pvp element that can become quite engrossing (you'll actually enjoy rolling a 1-that is until the reaper gives your worthy opponent a box of chocolates and kicks you in the junk)
*If you want to grow your board and aren't as in to the marathon sessions as some, this might be your guy, as by-and-large the challenges in the highlands are less, well-fatal- than those in the dungeon.
the fact of the matter is, though, if you enjoy (or are even familiar with) talisman enough to be reading a review of one of it's products, acquiring the highlands will make for a red-letter day. it is, after all, another piece of the realm. (and should hold us over untill the forest, city and dragon tower are released...tap foot, check watch, roll eyes, lay down for a nap and a bowl of rocky road...)
