Toys and Games Reviews of Fashion Design StudioCustomer Review: I've never seen her so CRAZY over a gift! Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased this for my 8-year old daughter's birthday. She is a creative sort of kid - but nothing too outstanding. She is just beginning to be come interested in style, clothes, and creating things. She has had this gift now for only a week... and has been spending COUNTLESS hours pouring over it. She has designed and created new clothes for her Barbies as well as stuffed animals (I even went to the fabric store to get more fabric for her!)
I would highly reccommend this for any girl who already has a creative bent - or is just beginning to exhibit one. It gives them all the tools they will need to create - and includes the "grown up" supplies (esp. the doll form) in "kid" sizes. I will definitely be giving this gift to nieces as they reach that 8-9 year mark!
Customer Review: Not for under-twelves! Summary: 3 Stars
We purchased this for our nine year old, as it is rated for "Nine and Up". While the quality of the materials is good, the instructions are minimal and only briefly touch upon the complex process of fashion design. It is not possible for a child (or adult, for that matter) to create the clothing pictured on the box or in the "directions" without extensive sewing experience. Secondary complaint: why include a fabric swatch book with NONE of the fabrics in the swatch book included in the kit? That alone makes for an incredibly frustrating design experience, even if you forego the sewing. For kids under twelve, or those without sewing experience, the Paper Fashions Kit by Klutz is far easier to use, and more satisfying.
Customer Review: Not for a novice Summary: 2 Stars
This is not a simple toy and my 9 year old daughter requires a significant amount of help to enjoy it. First off there's a blank sketch pad, it would be really great if they'd have included at least an outline of a figure for little girls.
Then there's loose bits of fabric, some sequins and bric a brac as well as spools of thread and glue. I spent almost an hour with my daughter and I could feel how frustrated she was because this isn't a 9 year old toy. I've just taught her to darn a ruffle but if you don't sew this is a useless item.
If you do sew you realize that sewing tiny outfits is significantly more difficult than large ones so maybe you know better than to buy this toy.
Customer Review: Okay, but not the best for children under 10 or 11 Summary: 3 Stars
I bought this for my 9 year old daughter for Christmas as she has decided she wants to be a Fashion Designer when she grows up. The kit say's recommended for age 10 and up, but I thought she's close enough and wanted to give her a few different design kits to try out. This one she really liked, however she played with it for one day and I can see it will probably be the one that sits and never gets touched again. It was very difficult for her to put together an actual dress. I think what she ended up creating was mostly "capes" and "shawls". I would definately say this is a kit that is best for age's 11 and up or with kids with a little bit more experience in actual sewing.
Customer Review: Open-ended Summary: 4 Stars
My 11 year old really enjoys this open-ended kit. With all the fabrics, threads, and other materials, she has created dozens of "fashion designs". It comes with a few suggestions to get started and she has not become bored with it after more than 2 weeks. Works great with any fabric scraps you have laying around. It is a very specific creative craft though, so be sure the child you're buying for enjoys fashion. Parental supervision suggested for younger children (or if you have young children in the house)...this kit contains needles, scissors, and small bits.
