Customer Review: If you don't sew, don't bother

My daughter was SO excited to get this kit, as she'd been fawning over it in the catalogues for months. She was going to be able to make her own Barbie clothes! Well, unless you or your child is a competent seamstress, that's not going to happen. And even if you are, this kit won't contain all the materials you need to make them. Here are some of the highlights of this kit: First off, the mannequin is so wide that anything made on it is going to be swimming on Barbie. The measuring tape tore as she was unwrapping it. The threader disappeared into thin air just as we needed it. The cloth is wrapped in such tiny bolts that when unrolled it won't lie flat. There are no patterns to work with, or any type of closure (snaps, velcro, etc) so that the finished product will be useable. The colors of the thread don't match the cloth. The swatches and the cloth are totally different colors/patterns. This toy clearly isn't meant for children as young as 9, unless, as I said before, they already know how to sew (without a pattern). If your child wants to "make" her own Barbie clothes, I highly recommend one of the kits with the premade dresses that you can decorate. My daughter also received one of those, and she is really enjoying it.Customer Review: Great toy for the fashion-enthusiastic child!

As a parent I would say the following- this set came with a good choice of fabrics, trims and items needed to create a number of different fashion pieces. The one slight negative (and remember this comes from an adult's perspective) is the dress form's stability. It does tip over when you are working on it if you are not holding it steady. This is a result of a the small 3 pronged base. The actual dress form is not a Barbie-type body shape, but to be truthful that doesn't bother me at all and probably more appropriate for the age group that will be using this. It is soft enough for the pins to be inserted easily. It is a nice looking dress form so it is cute displayed on a desk or shelf also. From my perspective this set is great.
Now, from my daughter's perspective (8 1/2 years old)- She LOVES this set and sometimes much to my dismay, wants to work with it all the time. She would absolutely recommend this to any young fashion designer wannabe out there!
Customer Review: Beautiful, imaginative, creative, girlie-girl play!

This is one of the very best toys I've ever seen for exposing tweens and up to the wonders of fashion play. When kids are comfortable with learning very basic sewing skills (too young a child would only be frustrated) this Fashion Design Studio will open a new window to a magical world of fashion creativity.
You can design some really "fierce" fashions with a velvet manneqin, 4 mini "bolts" of faric totalling 6 yards, fun fur, sketch book, swatches, trims and more. This is just what I remember spending hours playing with as a kid -- I just about set up a factory in my room with every piece of leftover material and trim we had in the house! (My mother was always sewing!) I had the best-dressed Barbie on the face of the earth. If I had seen this Fashion Studio back then, I would have passed out from excitement!
As it says on the box, "Childhood creativity lasts a lifetime." I wish I could give this toy (and this company) ten stars.

I got this for my 11 year old daughter and she really likes it a lot. The dressmaker's form is sooo cute! It also comes with lots of other goodies. She has played with it for two solid days now and more important, is really interested in learning how to sew. I am not suprised that a nine year old struggled with it...however it is marked "10 and up." It is really not so much a toy as a mini design studio. I think the best thing is that the dress form can be used for draping fabrics which is an essential skill for young designers! My daugher has pinned two dresses together and they looked amazing. I bought this thinking it would be a fun and non threatening way to learn sewing, which I never really learned and always regretted. Plus it's just like Project Runway! I also recommend a few accessories which are available at Hearthsong, like a teeny sewing machine and a sewing kit. Overall, this is one of the nicest craft kits I've seen.Customer Review: disappointed

I am late in writing this review, but maybe that's a good thing. I purchased this as a gift for my then 8-year-old daughter last Christmas. She showed some interest in designing clothing at the time so I thought this would be a fun gift as well as help her develop both her interest and skill. I also thought we could create some new clothes for her dolls. Well, in the last year, it's been out of the box 2 or 3 times TOPS! It's not easy to work with, the model is not the same shape as her dolls, and it seemed to me that there was little instruction. I am not a seamstress so couldn't help her out at all. Her grandma is better but the dress still ended up looking goofy. Too hard to create something truly pretty, even though the fabric that was included was nice. Maybe this would be a good purchase for a family that already had some skills in this area? We definitely didn't think it was for beginners like us.
