Toys and Games Reviews of Fisher - Price® Music Box Teaching ClockCustomer Review: Disappointed, But Non-Moving Hand Is Fixable Summary: 3 Stars
I had the original version of this toy years ago. It was a hand-me-down, but its still functional, albeit in storage halfway across the country. I came across this re-make in a local Target and bought it immediately for our 20 month old son for Christmas. As you've been able to figure out from other reviews, this is indeed NOT the original clock. Its not made of wood, but cheaper plastic. The stickers don't seem to have very good adhesive on them, and it is indeed missing that "tick tock" sound that was such a trademark of the original.
Much to my annoyance, I discovered that technically this toy is not even made by Fisher-Price...its made (in China) by some company I never heard of called Basic Fun (even though the box has FP logos all over it, and even references the FP Factory in East Aurora, NY...again, while actually being made in CHINA). How they legally get away with this I'm not sure, because this screams of false advertising / product misrepresentation to me. Maybe Basic Fun is a subsidiary of FP or Mattel, who knows. Point being, there is a certain level of quality expectation that you associate with the FP name. Bad move on FP's part to have their name so prominently featured on a sub-par product which they apparently have nothing to do with, other than licensing the original design.
Like others have said, after a mere five days now of gentle use, the stickers have started to peel a little bit and yes...the hands stopped turning along with the music. I was winding it up and heard a 'CLUNK,' after which the hands stopped turning with the picture. HOWEVER....I was able to fix the problem.
Those of you whose hands have also stopped turning...try this. Hold the winder in back so that it wont turn. Then, while holding the winder in pkace, gently turn the center knob on the face of the clock that controls the long minute hand counter-clockwise until you feel it starting to tighten. Eventually it'll stop turning when its completely tightened, like a screw. Now the clock should work perfectly again. If the hands / picture don't move at all, its overtightened. Just loosen it a quarter-turn. Seems you have to periodically re-tighten the hand.
So because I was able to fix it, I don't consider the purchase a total loss. Still, it absolutely shouldn't break after less than a week, and I certainly shouldn't have to regularly tighten anything on a toy that's designated for ages 1+. But my son loves it so I'll just keep fixing it until he gets bored with it...because despite its flaws its still a charming toy, and he loves clocks. Its about as reasonable a facsimile to the original as I should have probably expected to find these days. Still, I will follow in others footsteps and complain directly to the company about this toy.
