Toys and Games Reviews of Sea Monkeys And Aquarium

Customer Review: Sea Monkeys are a great product.
Summary: 5 Stars

Sea Monkeys are a good pet for children who want a pet. They are a low maitinence hybrid brine shrimp. The can get from 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch long. Kids will enjoy watching them. I reccomend that you order a "million bubbles air pump" from the booklet included with the sea-monkeys, because for the first week, you have to aerate the water, and this is the easiest and most effective way of aerating. OR, another good way to aerate the water is to take a straw, poke small holes around the bottom with a needle or pin, and blow through it while it is in the tank. This WILL work to, because when you exhale, you blow out enough oxygen to support the small creature's lives. If you do use the straw, you should do it atleast a few times a day, unlike the once a day you only need with the airpump. Feeding is simple,to, you just feed once on the fifth day with a small scoop included, and once a week after that. And, read the instructions CAREFULLY, for you may add to much food, use non-boiled tap water, not aerate enough, or think that when you first add the eggs after adding the water purifier 24 hrs ago, there are no sea monkeys. They are tiny specks "hopping" along in the water. Sometimes they dont come for a few days, so leave it and watch very carefully. Sea Monkeys reach full size at 6-8 weeks, and can live a couple years. Sorry about the long review, but- Sea monkeys are a great pet, just remember, follow the instructions carefully!

Customer Review: Brought back childhood memories.

When I found this on (...), I just HAD to have it! As a little girl, I had owned SeaMonkeys. I wanted to share the experience of excitement with my boyfriend... we really wanted a pet but circumstances wouldn't allow for a dog or cat.

So, we followed the directions and within 24 hours we had baby SeaMinkeys! We were sooo excited! There were so many of them. AND they grew bigger than when I had them as a little girl. (they've genetically altered them to grow larger and live longer)

At the end of the summer, I had to move back home to help my mom out... and I left my little ones in the care of my boyfriend. Well, he didn't airate the water or feed them like he was supposed to. Most of them ended up dying. All, but 2 adults. It turned out they mated and a few days later, a whole new family was swimming around. They didn't last long, though... now there's none :(

Overall they lasted 2 months. They were fun to have... and very exciting to watch. They love light and react crazy to it... spinning in circles. I think they would all still be alive if I would have cared for them completely. But, it worked out for the best since now he's moving out west.

Ok, so they're not cats or dogs... but they are living creatures and it's fun to have them, especially if you live in a small apartment!

Try them! AND this particular set is great! Especially the light. But just don't leave it on too long... the batteries die quickly.

Customer Review: nice and fun
Summary: 4 Stars

We had a lot of fun with our seamonkeys ... I say 'had' because they are no more... Not that it is their fault...not at all: they faught against the orange juice till they could no more... Yes, my 4 year old wanted to pour some extra water in the tank (and she was right: the level was a bit low), where she was wrong was that she forgot to clean the glass so she pour a bit of water mixed with the rest of her orange juice. May all our seamonkeys RIP ... That was not the first battle they had to go through: one time the same 4 year old overfed them big time: the tank was completely filled with food: all seamonkeys died. BUT: 2 weeks later everything cleared up and a whole new generation of monkeys was born! Quite amazing, so one tip: no matter what happens: do not give up on them too soon, they can come back when you least expect it!
We had a good time with the monkeys and they lived a whole year before they were brutaly terminated by the orangejuice...
I took away one star because of the little light that died way to soon (after few weeks). One last thing: do not by the millionbubble blower: a (narrow) straw in your mouth and gentle blowing will do just fine to give the little fellows extra oxygen (just make sure you pay attention not to suck and swallow some of the babies!)

I am sure your kids and you are gonna have a good time

Customer Review: A neat little set-up
Summary: 4 Stars

OK, the first thing to mention is that these are not really anything like monkeys (I assume everyone knows that, but I thought I would say it just in case). What they are is brine shrimp. They are still fun and interesting to watch though.

The little aquarium is pretty handy and well constructed. It holds about a cup and a half of water. The package comes with a number of ingredients calibrated for that size aquarium, so if you wanted to put them in something else you'd have to "cheat."

If you wanted to cheat and use something bigger, here are my recommendations:

The "water purifier" packet is very probably a combination of salt, EDTA to remove metal ions, and probably a phosphate buffering system. If you want to use a larger aquarium, you won't have enough purifier for it. So what you should do is buy distilled water in the grocery store so you won't need the ion chelator, add a tablespoon of salt for every liter of water (you'll need to buy some without Iodine), and a pinch of Baking Soda (maybe 1/16th of a teaspoon per liter of water). You can feed Brine Shrimp a number of foods. They'll eat yeast (either Brewers or regular baking yeast) or Spirolina

If you are happy with the small aquarium, I'd recommend sticking with the packets they give you. They seem to have their system worked out pretty well.

Customer Review: Sea Monkeys make great apartment pets
Summary: 4 Stars

We live in an apartment that charges a $350 deposit on a cat or dog plus an extra $30 a month on the rent. As I have a personal aversion to reptiles in the house and there isn't enough room for a fish aquarium, we choose sea monkeys for our 7 yr old son's first pet.

The only problem we have had with the sea monkeys is the print in handbook is so small you need a magifing glass to read it. Even then it is difficult as the print is light on a light gray paper. This prompted my husband to ignore most of the directions and just read the bold print headings. (Is that a man thing???) Our sea monkeys are growing but because my husband used tap water and did not circulate the sea monkey's aquarium water during the first two days, we lost many of them. However they are starting to make a comeback and we now have about 30 live sea monkeys that are big enough to see without a magnifing glass and they are'performing' tricks for our son. (directions in the book for 'training' the sea monkeys)

One irritant: The light uses two triple A batteries. As the light is a very strong beam it drains the batteries very quickly.
