Toys and Games Reviews of Erector Spykee - The Spy Robot

Customer Review: Lots of fun and possibilities!
Summary: 5 Stars

Pretty good fun. It didnt take me too long assemble Spykee and after alot of button pushing/page turning this thing does work as advertised. I have no problems accessing and controlling the robot in local or remote modes. My wife likes to follow me around the house with it while she is in class. You can skpe using a regular usb headset( I use the one from my PS2), and its rather cool. It would be nice if Spykee's arms moved though. It is and Erector product so its compatible with Eretor pieces. I have even done a few low-tech modifications using a reciever and a few servos from one of my rc helicopters giving Spykee mobility in a few joints when in local mode. The developers could have given him a few more functions but overall, Spykee is a lot of fun. Maybe I'll arm him with an airsoft weapon...hmm.

Customer Review: Erector Spykee
Summary: 2 Stars

Erector Spykee is a hyper inflated toy that is hardly worth the small mental effort to put together a few indistinct mechanisms that resemble dumb cranes or hulking robotics. You can't do much with it, it's expensive and math and science lovers rave about it day in day out. It's overrated by everyone who has purchased one and there's no evidence that this is any more productive for the brain than a pile of bricks. This toy is pushed by the elitist robotic sub-culture who think they are the wave of the future.

If you are using it for kids, you're better off just getting a block set, an army set, and a classical Erector Building Set. You'll even have money left over to get a bike.

This is a robotic size piece of junk. I wasted my time and money on this.

Customer Review: No customer service / BEWARE CHARGING STATION RECALL
Summary: 1 Stars

Assembly may be a little challenging for some kids, but overall not bad just take an extra look at each picture. (Illustrated instructions only).
Operating the robot in local mode basic and intermediate is easy but requires occasional reset. Also automatic docking stopped working.
We still have not been able to set up the robot in advanced mode (remote control). This was the main reason for buying the toy to keep an eye on the pets. Complaint of issues to customer support several times though e-mail without receiving any feedback for now 4 weeks. Same issue with charging station recall no new replacement or contact. BEWARE OF CHARGING STATION RECALL SEE [...]
Bottom line its only a toy not a surveillance camera (terrible low light even with build in lamp).

Customer Review: what a piece of junk!
Summary: 1 Stars

I like putting things together. This thing was no fun. You MUST use the directions. You start with a ton of little pieces and screw them together. It doesn't have nuts. It uses little plastic sleeves that you screw into. It took me 3 hours. I am very network savvy. It wasn't hard for me to set up. But I think it would be hard if not impossible for a lot of people. Its not sturdy at all. If you hit a wall the tank treads climb the wall and it flips over. Mine does work perfectly. I have driven around the house twice in a month. I have driven in from a hotel. The head light is useless. So if your driving it remotely you need to stay in lighted rooms. I paid 99 bucks and would still send it back if it wasn't so hard to get it back in the box.

Customer Review: Junk !!
Summary: 2 Stars

Watch out ! Check the manufacturing date at the bottom of the robot. I got August 2008 ! This is too old and the battery won't hold charge, that's why I read several complains.

I bought it yesterday and found out one motor is broken (yellow cable). Should I return this to store ? Forget it, I got a good price for this toy and I'm going to hack it. I have disassembled it, removing everything and I will transform this into a better robot with:

1. Better antenna
2. New battery (will be 8 AA 2200mAh, the factory is 1800 mAh NiMh)
3. Intercept signaling (I2C or just the LED to control camera tilting, etc)
4. New motor

For anyone who doesn't have tinkering skill, stay away from this toy !
