Customer Review: Not your Dad's Erector Set

I owned an original (Trademarked) Erector Set as a child in the 1950's. It was a great toy; lots of fun. Alas the present owners of the Erector Set Trademark have dimmed its original reputation. Parts are thin, some plastic, no right-angled beams, and worst of all, unlike the original Erector Set with its powerful AC motor, the motor now is a wimpy 6 volt battery-operated motor that will barely (if that) power the toy. Pictorial instructions require complex bending of parts and installing screws and nuts in very tight places. I purchased this $78 Meccano for my nephew. He was frustrated to the point of not being able to get past the first few steps in the model he chose to build. Being an engineer by profession, I stepped in to try to help make the experience somewhat positive for him. All my efforts have resulted in a flimsy robot on wheels whose sole function is to roll forward and backwards using the remote control. The motor is so underpowered and the plastic gears so flimsy, it would not roll on a rug. By carefully doing the best I could to align shafts and reduce friction, I was able to get it to move on a smooth, level table top in jerky moves. Needless to say, with the competition of already- built toys on the market that do so much more and do it so much better, my nephew was quite underwhelmed.
